Bou- dreau and his nephew would regularly drink together, often leading Johns to assault his uncle, Deputy District Attor- ney Ron Brown said. Boudreau never reported the attacks. “He never wanted his nephew to get arrested, so charges were never filed,” Brown said. One night, Johns repeatedly punched, kicked and stomped on Boudreau. When Johns’ girlfriend tried to intervene, he allegedly assaulted her before she fled. Johns then dragged Bou- dreau out to a trailer and left him inside before leav- ing. When Johns checked the trailer the next day, Boudreau was dead. An autopsy revealed he had died from blunt-force trauma, including a crushed chest, nine broken ribs and injuries to his face and scalp. “It would be an extremely painful and slow way to die,” Brown said. Authorities found the body later that day, and Johns was arrested in Portland two days later. “The fight that we had was out of stupidity, alcohol and frickin’ human jealousy,” Johns said. Johns has faced numer- ous felony and misdemeanor charges in Clatsop County since 1992, including convic- tions for menacing, theft, crim- inal mischief, burglary, driving under the influence of intoxi- cants and assault. Circuit Court Judge Dawn McIntosh said she hopes Johns can better himself, but she is not optimistic. “This is an extremely sad case,” McIntosh said before referencing the previous times Johns had attacked Boudreau. “I wonder what he was think- ing in those last moments?” Johns apologized to mem- bers of his family who were in court for the hearing. He said some of them now look at him with contempt, but said he probably loved his uncle “more than any of them.” As part of the plea agree- ment, Johns will be required to pay $1,792 for his uncle’s funeral expenses. “I miss you, Ronny,” Johns said. “You’re in that band in the sky and I will be with you soon.” Insect: ‘It’s not a one-time quick fix kind of deal’ Continued from Page 1A labs at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo, the children of wild female silverspots collected from Mount Hebo in the Siu- slaw National Forest in Tilla- mook County. “Numbers are dictated year to year by (the Fish and Wild- life Service) but it is highly likely we will continue to operate at or near capacity over the next several seasons at least,” said Travis Koons, who oversees the Oregon Zoo’s butterfly conservation program. “We will continue to release high numbers of larvae at the various sites.” The silverspot caterpillars were placed on early blue vio- lets in three different areas on Saddle Mountain. The co-op wants to move because it has outgrown its store on Exchange Street downtown. “We think it works,” Stan- ley said of the expansion plan, and added, “We have 4,000 plus household owners that co-own our community busi- ness. This is a local venture that is really poised and ready to go to make this happen and a lot of people are frustrated that it’s delayed. We have made accommodations for the people impacted there. We understand their concerns.” “We tried to accommodate their requests as much as we could,” said Don Vallaster, a Portland architect who owns the property where the store wants to build and is working with the co-op to develop the site. If the property owners are hiring attorneys, he said, “I guess we’ll have to, too.” “It’s not our desire to go that route, but it looks like that’s where it’s going.” “We have worked with them since the inception of this project with the under- standing that we are going to do everything reasonable to keep their operation going, but that there was going to be some disruption,” City Engineer Nathan Crater said. She will start at the Clatsop County Fair, meet- ing local organizers and 4-H students while gauging interest for a class. By the end of the first year, Hamby said, she hopes to have 15 to 20 students involved and a core group of officers. Hamby has studied agri- culture at Blue Mountain Community College, East- ern Oregon University and Oregon State University, where she spent the last year as part of a master’s program in agricultural education. She applied in Astoria in part because she has a friend locally, liked the community atmo- sphere and was ready for a cooler climate. “The biggest thing I’ll have to get used to is the rain,” she joked.
