Valiants topple Warrenton The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — In the first game of the Seaside Wood Bat Tournament, pitcher Mikey Weber of Valley Catholic tossed a four-hit shutout, strik- ing out nine with one walk in a 10-0 win over a short-handed Warrenton team. The first five batters of the game for Valley Catholic reached base safely. The Val- iants loaded the bases with no outs, and Weber followed with a two-run double to cen- ter field for a quick 2-0 lead. Moments later, a triple by Will Schultheis to deep left field brought in two more runs, and the Valiants led 5-0 after one inning. Warrenton had hits from Maverick Pedraza, Jacob Morrow, Gabe Breitmeyer and Devin Jackson, but all four were left on base. Missing leadoff batter and No. 1 pitcher Dalton Knight for the weekend, and Kale’o Kapua for the first game, War- renton returns to action today in the consolation bracket vs. Madison. Seaside hammers The Dalles, 11-6 The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — Valley Cath- olic, Churchill, Baker and Seaside were the big winners Thursday at Broadway Field, on the first day of action in Seaside’s annual Wood Bat Tournament. The eight-team tourney continues today and Saturday at Broadway Field, with the championship game scheduled Pujols hits 630th HR; Angels rout Mariners for Saturday at 5:30 p.m. In Thursday’s final contest, Seaside broke open a close game and finished strong in an 11-6 victory over The Dalles. The Gulls advance to the semifinals, where they will face Baker at 5:30 p.m. today. “Great day of baseball,” said Seaside coach Dan McFadden. “And it was a real good win for us. They’re a team (The Dalles) that’s really good at putting the ball in play, and we played some great defense.” The Gulls put the ball in play quite a bit themselves, while pitcher Payton Wester- holm — who has spent the summer playing for the Lower Columbia AAA Legion team in Longview, Washington — made his first start of the sum- mer for Seaside. Pujols hit two home runs to tie Ken Griffey Jr. for sixth place with 630, and Fletcher connected for his first in the majors as the Los Angeles Angels romped to an 11-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. Pujols rarely talks about personal achievements. But matching Griffey, a former Mariners star, had him feel- ing an extra sense of pride. “Griffey was every- body’s hero growing up and that’s how I look at it,” Pujols said. “I know I am a right-handed hit- ter, but everybody wanted to have that sweet swing. For me, I got a chance to become pretty good friends with him. ... It’s just really special to tie a legend and against a team that he came up with in the big leagues.” Justin Upton also hom- ered for the Angels, who took two of three in the series. Tyler Skaggs pitched six strong innings in his return from the disabled list. Mariners starter James Paxton left in the first inning with lower back stiffness. Pujols hit a two-run shot in the first and a solo drive in the sixth. He also had three hits to pass ex-Angel Rod Carew and move into a tie for 25th all-time with Rickey Henderson at 3,055. It was the 50th multiho- mer game for Pujols, who has 16 home runs this sea- son. He went back-to-back with Upton in the sixth. five-plus innings before being relieved by Brayden Johnson in the sixth. Offensively, Johnson led the Gulls with three hits, including a three-run, inside- the-park home run. Travis Fenton, Dylan Meyer and Westerholm added two hits apiece for the Gulls, who are tuning up for next weekend’s junior state baseball state tournament in Corvallis. In Thursday’s second game of the Seaside tour- nament, two players from Madison collided going after a fly ball. Certainly didn’t take long for the 36-year-old American to get her game in gear and close in on what would be an eighth Wimbledon title, one short of Martina Navratilova’s record, and 24th Grand Slam trophy in all, equaling Marga- ret Court’s all-time mark. It was only 10 1/2 months ago that Williams had far more serious concerns. After giving birth to her daughter, Olympia, on Sept. 1, Williams dealt with health complications that included blood clots and led to what she said were multiple operations. “Almost didn’t make it, to be honest,” Williams said shortly after completing her 6-2, 6-4 semifinal victory over 13th-seeded Julia Goerges on Thursday. She’s been wearing com- pression leggings during her matches as a precaution and says she remains nervous. “I mean, even this week, I had a pain in my leg, and I went to the worst-case sce- nario: ‘Oh, my God, I have a (pulmonary embolism) in my leg,’” Williams said. “I didn’t know I would have such, kind of, traumatic thoughts. Espe- cially now that I have a daugh- ter, I want to be around as long as I can to support her. It’s interesting how that men- tal recovery is actually tak- ing much longer than I ever expected.” The tennis? That’s come quite naturally, not surprisingly. She was off the tour for more than a year after her Aus- tralian Open title in January 2017 — won while she was pregnant, she later revealed. Williams first came back by playing doubles with her older sister, Venus, for the U.S. Fed Cup team in February. Then came her singles return, at Indiana Wells in March, when she won her first two matches before losing to her sibling. Next was a first-round loss at Miami. “I honestly felt I would have done better in some of the earlier tournaments. That was the hardest part — accepting that I didn’t,” Williams said. “Our very first brand new mattress” JUNE 22 - JULY 30 $500 savings applies only to king size mattress sets with a king size foundation or two twin XL foundations.
