By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian I t was Clatsop County’s “Bat- tle of the League Champions” night at the ballpark Monday, as three teams that either won or tied for league championships last spring met in front of a large crowd at Aiken Field for a three-way doubleheader. Dane Gouge’s Astoria Ford team hosted Knappa and Warrenton to close out the junior state regular sea- son. The same three teams will be in action later this week in the district tournament at Warrenton. The Knappa Loggers rallied for a 9-8, Game 1 win over Astoria Ford, but they came up short in a 3-0 loss to Warrenton in Game 2. The district’s No. 1 seed in the tournament will be — ironically — none of the above teams. Seaside fin- ished with a 5-0 league record, and will be the No. 1 seed in the weekend tournament. With Monday’s results, Astoria Ford, Knappa and Warrenton all fin- ished with 3-2 league records. In a three-way coin flip tie-breaker afterwards, Astoria was the odd team out and so received the No. 4 seed in the district tournament. Warrenton’s win over Knappa gives the Warriors the No. 2 seed over the third-place Loggers. Knappa began Monday’s action by giving up six runs to Astoria in the first inning of Game 1. Astoria’s Adam Feldman had a leadoff double, which was followed by two errors, a walk and a wild pitch, as the Fishermen built a quick 6-0 lead. A leadoff double in the second inning by Knappa’s Logan Flues led to the first run for the Loggers, who tacked on a run in the third and two in the fourth on a two-run double by Ryson Patterson. Patterson trotted home on a bas- es-loaded walk, and Mason Wester- holm’s single up the middle scored two to tie the game at 7-7. Astoria (the visiting team in Mon- day’s game) had two runners on base in the top of the seventh but failed to score, and the Loggers took advan- tage in the bottom of the inning. Knappa’s Cameron Miethe drew a one-out walk, and one out later Jax- son Goodman drove a double down the left field line that put runners at Knappa’s success at the plate in Game 1 did not carry over into the nightcap, due to a gem of a pitching performance by Warrenton’s Dalton Knight. Knight faced just 24 batters (three over the minimum) in leading the Warriors to their biggest win of the summer, 3-0. Knight threw 93 pitches over seven innings, and allowed just three hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks. Teammate Jacob Morrow gave the Warriors all they would need offensively, with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. “Dalton certainly threw very well, and Jake took care of the rest,” said Warrenton coach Lennie Wolfe. “And I thought Ryson Patterson pitched very well for Knappa (allow- ing just three hits himself, with 10 strikeouts and four walks). “Adding that insurance run in the seventh didn’t hurt,” Wolfe said, as Alec Herrera drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on Ethan Caldwell’s single to center. In the district tournament later this week, Astoria Ford and Seaside will square off in Game 1 (Saturday, 1 p.m.), followed by Knappa vs. War- renton in Game 2 (4 p.m.). There will be no admission charged for fans. All four teams will play again Sunday, with the top two finishers qualifying for the state tournament July 19-22 at Crescent Valley High School. Even if the Fishermen qual- ify, Astoria will not attend the state tournament due to a prior commit- ment. Should the Fishermen finish in one of the top two spots, the third- place finisher would take Astoria’s spot in the state tournament.
