It’s a big facility, it’s old, there’s problems.” Sunspire Health maintains facilities across the country, including in California, Texas and Florida. The company’s website doesn’t outline the cost of seeking treatment at Astoria Pointe, but notes it accepted many major private health insurance providers. Sunspire Health adver- tised Astoria Pointe as a restorative and calming loca- tion. “Being here is like a breath of fresh air, and it feels like a new chapter in life is starting,” the website stated. Astoria Pointe provided 40 beds, but most of these were occupied by people from out of town seeking treatment. “For us one of the chal- lenges with Astoria Pointe was people came from all over the country to get treat- ment there,” Baker said. “If they relapsed or were kicked out of treatment, then often they would end up with us.” Helping Hands also saw former Astoria Pointe clients come through the door. “So whatever happens with that facility, I hope there is some level of commitment to serve local folks,” Baker said. “Because it was hard to get a local bed,” Evans added. “It was impossible,” Baker said. Cemetery: City is ‘still playing catch-up’ Continued from Page 1A The cost of an adult burial will rise from $1,286 to $1,414. Chapel reservations will rise from $83 per hour to $91 per hour. Maintenance of cemetery grounds has been a source of consternation for the past several years. Warrenton City Commissioner Mark Baldwin called the ceme- tery’s condition “shameful” in July 2017, referencing graves that were overgrown with grass and weeds. The Parks and Recreation Department has added a maintenance worker to help solve the problem. “A part-time seasonal employee dedicated to the maintenance will help provide that beautifica- tion for maintenance out there while still keeping our costs relatively low,” Cosby said. Top conservatives, including key Trump allies, announced they were intro- ducing bills to stop the prac- tice amid a public outcry over the administration’s “zero tol- erance” approach to illegal crossings. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas introduced legislation that the White House said it was reviewing, and Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, a leader of the conservative Freedom Caucus, also intro- duced a measure. Both bills were offered as alternatives in case broader GOP immigration legisla- tion heading for a vote this week fails, as is likely. “This becomes a backup proposal,” Meadows told reporters at the White House. Trump’s meeting late today with House Republicans comes as lawmakers in both parties are up in arms after days of news reports showing images of children being held at border facilities in cages and an audio recording of a young child pleading for his “Papa.” The issue boiled over today at a House hearing on an unre- lated subject when protesters with babies briefly shut down proceedings. Papa!’ Audio of children stokes rage over separation Associated Press BROWNSVILLE, Texas — An audio recording that appears to capture the heartbreaking voices of small Span- ish-speaking children crying out for their parents at a U.S. immigration facility took center stage in the growing uproar over the Trump administration’s policy of separat- ing immigrant children from their parents. “Papa! Papa!” one child is heard weeping in the audio file. Human rights attorney Jennifer Harbury said she received the tape from a whistleblower and it was recorded in the last week. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said she had not heard the audio but said children taken into cus- tody by the government are being treated humanely. The audio surfaced as backlash over the policy wid- ened. The Mormon church said it is “deeply troubled” by the separation of families at the border and urged national leaders to find compassionate solutions. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, reversed a decision to send a National Guard helicopter from his state to the Mex- ican border to assist in a deployment, citing the administra- tion’s “cruel and inhumane” policy. on the House Oversight and Government Reform Commit- tee, teared up as he pleaded with Republicans on the panel to end what he called “intern- ment camps.” “We need you, those chil- dren need you —and I am talking directly to my Republi- can colleagues— we need you to stand up to President Don- ald Trump,” he said. Under the current pol- icy, all unlawful crossings are referred for prosecution — a process that moves adults to the custody of the U.S. Mar- shals Service and sends many children to facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services. Under the Obama administration, such families were usually referred for civil deportation proceed- ings, not requiring separation. Nearly 2,000 children were separated from their fami- lies over a six-week period in April and May. The House is already embroiled in an election-year struggle over immigration leg- islation that threatens to hurt Republicans in November. Democrats have seized on the family separation issue. And now, Republicans are increasingly joining them in their call to stop separating families. “While cases are pending, families should stay together,” tweeted Cruz, who is in an unexpectedly tough re-elec- tion battle. He introduced his own bill to speed up court pro- ceedings to no more than 14 days. “Children belong with their families.” Michigan Republican Rep. Fred Upton called for an immediate end to the “ugly and inhumane practice” of separation. “It’s never accept- able to use kids as bargain- ing chips in political process.” Kansas GOP Sen. Pat Rob- erts said he was “against using parental separation as a deter- rent to illegal immigration.” “The time is now for the White House to end the cruel, tragic separations of families,” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska. From afar, ailing Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., tweeted, “The administration’s current family separation policy is an affront to the decency of the American people and contrary to principles and values upon which our nation was founded. The administration has the power to rescind this policy. It should do so now.” The Trump administration insists the family separations are required under the law. But after signaling Monday that it would oppose any fix aimed solely at addressing that issue, the White House said Tues- day it was reviewing the emer- gency legislation being intro- duced by Cruz to keep migrant families together. The senator’s bill would add more federal immigration judges, authorize new tempo- rary shelters to house migrant families, speed the processing of asylum cases and require that families that cross the bor- der illegally be kept together, absent criminal conduct or threats to the welfare of any children. The depart- ment is expected to present its findings at a state land board meeting later this year. The state lands department can terminate its contract with the state forestry depart- ment for Common School Fund land management with 90 days’ notice. The forestry depart- ment says that some of that increase would fund person- nel to manage the Common School Fund forestland cur- rently in its care. When it comes to manag- ing those forests, the Depart- ment of Forestry plans and administers timber sales, con- ducts surveys for threatened and endangered species, con- ducts forest inventory and manages reforestation and young forest stands.
