His two-run home run in the ninth on Wednesday, after a stel- lar defensive play in the top of the inning, gave the Seattle Mar- iners an 8-6 victory and sweep of the three-game series over the Los Angeles Angels. “We have such a powerful lineup,” Haniger said. “On any given night it can be somebody else and that’s kind of the vibe. There’s no panic.” Photos by Gary Henley/The Daily Astorian Jeremy Carow slides in safely past catcher Mike Mizell. Former Seaside players honor No. 4 Gizdavich Hall of Famer and Olympic gold medalist Donovan dies The Daily Astorian S EASIDE — A gathering of former Seaside base- ball players took part in the fourth annual event for No. 4 last Sunday. The Jon Gizdavich Memo- rial game was held at Broadway Field. It helps raise money for scholarships awarded in the name of the late Seaside High School student-athlete. Gizdavich was a Class of 2007 graduate, and was nearing his graduation from Oregon State University at the time of his death in a car accident in January 2013. His girlfriend, Bri Hostetler, and former teammate Ross Knut- sen helped organize the annual event, the first of which was held in 2015. In addition to honoring Gizda- vich, the event also raises money for an annual $1,000 scholarship, awarded in Gizdavich’s name. Winners of the 2018 scholar- ship were Jetta Ideue and Skyler Yoshino. Anne Donovan, the Basketball Hall of Famer who won a national championship at Old Domin- ion, two Olympic gold medals as a player and another as a coach, died Wednesday of heart failure. She was 56. Donovan’s family confirmed the death in a statement. “While it is extremely difficult to express how devastating it is to lose Anne, our family remains so very grateful to have been blessed with such a wonderful human being,” the statement said. — Associated Press SCOREBOARD LOCAL SPORTS SCHEDULE TODAY Junior baseball — Astoria Ford at Warrenton (2), 4 p.m. Former Seaside baseball player Jon Gizdavich in a 2006 game. The soccer showpiece will return to the U.S. for the first time since 1994 after gaining 134 votes, while Morocco got 65 at the FIFA Congress in Moscow, where the 2018 tournaments starts today. Germany looks to become 1st repeat Cup champ in half-century MOSCOW — After raising the World Cup eight miles from Copacabana Beach four years ago, Germany hopes to lift the tro- phy four miles from the Kremlin on July 15 and become the first repeat champion in more than a half-century. The soccer world gathers at 12 stadiums in 11 cities across the European portion of Russia start- ing today for a 32-day, 64-match championship. Much has changed since Die Mannschaft humiliated the host Selecao 7-1 in the 2014 semifinals, then left Rio de Janei- ro’s Maracana Stadium with a 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina on Mario Goetze’s 113th-minute goal. The United States will be missing from soccer’s showcase after seven straight appearances. Four-time champion Italy will be watching from home for the first time since 1958. — Associated Press 3 DAY SALE HAPPY FATHER’S DAY JUNE 15TH, 16TH & 17TH WHOLE CANTALOUPE MELONS FRESH & SWEET 2 FOR 5.00 7.99 WHOLE SEEDLESS WATERMELONS SWEET & JUICY 4.99 EA 2.99 ST.
