4B THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 2018 CONTESTS TUG OF WAR 1 p.m., Saturday, June 16, at the Midsummer Pole The Tug of War is back this year, and we hope each Scandina- vian Lodge will form a team of eight participants to compete at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, in front of the Midsummer Pole. If you or someone you know would like to participate in this fun coed event, contact your favorite lodge and sign up! The prize for the Tug of War is the coveted “UFF DA” trophy! Each lodge will have its own sign-up sheet, and you can also sign up during the festival at the Festival Souvenir Booth. Festival Events FRIDAY, JUNE 15 SATURDAY, JUNE 16 BOOTHS OPEN MIDNIGHT SUN BREAKFAST served by Scandinavian Café of Vancouver, Wash. 2 to 6:30 p.m. – Arena Visit the Midsummer vendors to find specialty Scandinavian items and handcrafted treasures. Many booths offer Scandinavian food items for your dining and snack- ing pleasure. DANISH AEBLESKIVER-EATING CONTEST ENTERTAINMENT 3:45 p.m., Saturday, June 16 – Exhibit Hall 5 to 7 p.m. – Arena Stage 2:45 p.m., Sunday, June 16 – Exhibit Hall The Kleiveland-Toppe Duo will perform culturally unique folk music from Norway. The Danish Aebleskiver Eating Contest started at the 50th anniversary festival and was a big hit! Individuals will have two opportunities to participate in this event: 3 p.m., Saturday, June 16, and 2:45 p.m. June 17, both n the Exhibit Hall. Eight contestants are needed for each contest. Each of the contestants will eat a plate of Aebleskivers, delicious Danish doughnuts dusted with powdered sugar. Aebleskivers are donated by the Lower Columbia Danish Society. The first to finish the most Aebleskiver in the time limit will win a “Danish” prize! Sign up at the Festival Souvenir Booth. SWEDISH MEATBALL-EATING CONTEST BEER GARDEN OPEN 3 to 11 p.m. Astoria Brewing Company will present a selection of award-winning handcrafted mi- crobrews and a limited menu. BEEF POT ROAST DINNER host- ed by Olney Grange 4:30 to 7 p.m. or until supply runs out – Exhibit Hall Can’t get enough of those succulent Swedish meatballs? This contest is for you! Beef pot roast, baked potato, green beans, roll, salad, pie, beverage, $14; children under 11, $8. Eight lucky contestants will have the opportunity to eat a plate of Swedish meatballs donated by the Scandinavian Café. 7 p.m. – Arena 3:30 p.m., Saturday, June 16 – Exhibit Hall The participant who eats the most meatballs in the allotted time wins the “Swedish” prize! Sign up for this contest at the Festival Souvenir Booth. SCANDINAVIAN SPELLING BEE 1:45 p.m., Sunday, June 17 – Exhibit Hall Are you a spelling expert? How do you do with the unique words of the Scandinavian countries? Come give them a try. The winner will receive the ”Way to be Scandinavian” prize. Sign up for this event at the Festival Souvenir Booth. SVEN AND OLE JOKE COMPETITION Audition: 5:30 p.m., Saturday, June 16 – Information/Souvenir booth Performance: 8:15 p.m., Saturday, June 16 – intermission of the ARRIVAL/DREAMS concert Are you talented enough to pull off a clever routine of three “Sven and Ole” jokes? Meet at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, June 15, to audition at the Souvenir booth with appropriate, family-friendly jokes. Scandinavian accents are encouraged! Finalists will perform during intermission of the ARRIVAL/ DREAMS, Canada’s Tribute to ABBA and Fleetwood Mac concert that starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 16. (Extra ticket required) The winner(s) will win the “Lena” trophy. Sign up at the Festival Souvenir Booth. QUEEN’S CORONATION Princesses sponsored by the Dan- ish Society, Finnish Brotherhood, Sons of Norway and VASA Swed- ish Lodge will speak about their Scandinavian heritage. A panel of judges will select one to reign as Miss Scandinavia 2018. Stay after- wards for the Torchlight Proces- sion, Bonfire and family-friendly Queen’s Family Ball with music from Scandinavian Country. TORCHLIGHT PARADE TO BONFIRE AND HEX BURNING 8 p.m. approximately (following the Queen’s coronation) – Park- ing Area Scandia men with flaming torch- es will lead the newly crowned Miss Scandinavia and audience members to the bonfire to throw straw hexes into the flames. This tradition symbolizes ridding one- self of bad luck for the year. QUEEN’S FAMILY BALL with Scandinavian Country 8 to 10:30 p.m. – Exhibit Hall Miss Scandinavia and her father or special partner will lead the first dance of the 2018 Midsum- mer Festival. Join the dancing or watch the dancers and listen to great music. Fund. Registration is available online or at the festival. Check-in is 7 to 8 a.m. Saturday in the Main Entry Hall. BOOTHS 7 to 11 a.m. – Exhibit Hall 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. – Arena Buffet: Norwegian Jarlsberg egg cake, Finnish pyttipannu (Scandinavian pan-fried scramble of potato, onions, sausage and egg), Swedish pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries, Norwegian rommegrot (sour cream porridge/ pudding with cinnamon and sugar), lefse (fresh off the griddle), Scandinavian cheese, shrimp and salmon lox, fresh assorted breads, fruit, fresh baked Danish pastry, coffee, OJ, water. $10 (Kids 6 and under: $5) RUNNING OF THE TROLLS Thanks to our primary sponsor, Columbia Memorial Hospital 8:30 a.m. – Walluski area Join us for a walk or run in the beautiful Walluski countryside. Pick up a festival program at the admission table or view one of the posted schedules to find your favorite band, singer or dance troupe. EMPIRE OF CHIVALRY AND STEEL VIKING ENCAMPMENT 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. – outdoors The Empire of Chivalry and Steel will hold an open house in their Viking encampment outdoors south of the Arena. Costumed reenactors will demonstrate crafts, tournaments, armor making and combat arts from the culture of the Middle Ages. BEER GARDEN 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Astoria Brewing Company will present a selection of award-winning handcrafted microbrews and a limited menu. The Astor Street Opry will present its standing-room only show of olio acts from “Shang- haied in Astoria” at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. BARNEFEST 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Arena Young festival attendees can partici- pate in children’s activities in the Barnefest area. This area is staffed by volunteers from Tongue Point Job Corps Center, the Nordic Viking Dancers and parents. Children under 12 need to be accompanied by an adult.
