2C THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2018 Ride: On a UTV, pay special attention when travelling uneven ground actually left. Buying new from a dealer is your best bet and will come with a warranty and guarantee. Check with your local power sports dealership for deals and financing options. Continued from Page 1C An electric vehicle is differ- ent because it relies solely on an electrical power plant, which makes it great for the environ- ment and can save you money by not needing to fill up at the gas station. But are these specially engi- neered vehicles right for you and the area where you live? Pros and cons One of the biggest advan- tages an owner of an electric vehicle receives is the low cost of maintenance and the fuel savings. Since there are fewer moving parts, repairs will not be required as frequently as a gas-powered vehicle. You might also qualify for a tax break when you purchase an eco-friendly vehicle and some- times a discount from your utility company if you plan to charge it at home. The downside to an elec- tric car is that many places in the country just aren’t ready for them yet. If you find your- self low on a charge, it might be hard to find a charging station. Keep in mind that proper planning is required every time you get behind the wheel to pre- vent yourself being stranded and in need of a recharge. Another shortcoming is that, since these vehicles are so new to the market, there won’t be as many options to choose from. Where to buy an electric vehicle Not every dealership in the country has gotten behind the electric car craze. By research- ing your local area and sur- rounding communities, you should be able to find one that keeps a few in stock or can order one. Try not to go too far out of town, as the dealership will likely be the best place to take it back for service. The tech- nicians there will be highly trained to deal with the intricate electrical system that makes your vehicle run. BICYCLES An all-terrain vehicle A sport bike or simply a side-by-side. What- ever you choose to call it, they are a great alternative to all-ter- rain vehicles due to their larger size and safer frames. Outdoor enthusiasts also love the ample room for storing their hunting and camping gear. While the price is a little higher than a standard ATV, the ben- efits may be exactly what you need. Work or play The UTV was designed to be more useful than an ATV yet more versatile than a pick-up truck. The vehicles gained pop- ularity among farmers and those who required compact transportation to monitor their operations. The side-by-side design allows for more than one per- son to travel aboard and offers plenty of storage space to hold necessary tools or gear needed to make repairs around the property. A UTV also has plenty of purpose as a recreational vehi- cle for those who enjoy hunt- ing, fishing or simply spending time outdoors. When you invest in a UTV, you will be prepared to navigate trails in style and comfort. With their popularity ris- ing, aftermarket manufactur- ers are creating more and more options for customization, such as enhanced suspension, light bars and custom wheels. Safety tips: According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one of the most common hazards associated with UTVs is roll- over accidents. They can expe- rience mishaps when the cargo bed is overloaded, while trav- eling on side slopes beyond the vehicle’s specifications and while attempting to climb a grade the vehicle cannot manage. While operating a UTV, pay special attention when travel- ing on uneven ground to pre- vent tipping and always wear the included safety belt. Buy used or new? Buying a used UTV from a private party may save you a few bucks, but it can have many downfalls. For starters, you don’t know how the vehi- cle was maintained, how hard it was driven or how much life is Whether you are looking for a way to stay in shape or need a quick mode of transportation to accompany you to work or on the trails, a bicycle is a via- ble option. This classic vehicle comes in many different types and can handle the most rug- ged terrain or smooth bike paths with ease. Choosing which routes you’ll be taking is the first con- sideration to make when buying a bicycle. Which style is right for you? Walking into a bicycle dealer can be intimidating if you’re not sure what to look for. The differ- ent types featured in the show- room have different purposes.
