2B THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2018 Former pastor wants to open monastery on North Coast The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — Mitch Mayhue is hoping for a hand opening a Christian monas- tery on the North Coast. Mayhue, a former pas- tor, member of the Salva- tion Army and disabled vet- eran who lives in Seaside, is part of the St. Bernard Monastery, a new ecumen- ical Christian ministry. The monastery would include a temple, seminary and other services in a private setting. “We want to open up a shelter for Christian vet- erans,” Mayhue said, add- ing the center would go off referrals. The ministry hopes to open monasteries all around the world, Mayhue said. But with his mobility ham- pered by disabilities, May- hue said he is hoping to start the group’s first loca- tion close to his home. The group is looking for finan- cial support and land. “I don’t care if it’s a hole in the ground or a barn,” Mayhue said. “We just need a good start.” Mayhue said those inter- ested should visit the Mon- astery of St. Bernard Face- book page. RELIGION BRIEFS St. Mary, Star of the Sea Tatiana Pitstick has been hired as the new director of Religious Education at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Cath- olic Church, replacing retir- ing Rosey Doyle. She will be introduced at all Masses this weekend. Also this weekend, all Extraordinary Eucharist Min- isters of Holy Communion will be given certificates from the office of Divine Worship of the Archdiocese of Port- land.
