GET YOUR GOON ON JUNE 7 THROUGH 10
WITH ACTIVITIES ON THE NORTH COAST
By RYAN HUME
FOR COAST WEEKEND
oonies never say die, and fans of this
beloved ’80s cult classic have taken
that message to heart, flocking to the
North Coast’s filming locations year
after year.
Yes, Thursday, June 7, is Goonies Day
again!
Why June 7? The Steven Spielberg-pro-
duced film, shot on location in Astoria and
around Cannon Beach, landed in theaters on
that day in 1985, and generations of viewers
have since fallen in love with Mikey, Mouth,
Data and Chunk and the rest of the gang.
In 2010, then-mayor Willis Van Dusen
officially declared June 7 Goonies Day in
Astoria — though, by then, hordes of fans
had already been making the pilgrimage to
the city for years.
According to Regina Willkie at the Asto-
ria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Conference,
which handles Goonies Day events, “We
don’t have a lot of major activities planned
since this isn’t a five-year anniversary year.”
The next major anniversary, the film’s 35th,
is still a few years away, in 2020.
So, with the famed Goonies’ house
off-limits to fans and other filming locations
(like Warren Field) now gone, what’s a
Goonie gotta do to get their Goon on around
here?
Let this quick guide direct you to the
best Goonies happenings in the area. You
and your crew of misfits will surely have
plenty of reason to Truffle Shuffle to the
tune of Cyndi Lauper.
Gooning out
Best place to start: Astoria-Warrenton
Area Chamber of Conference Visitor Center,
111 W. Marine Dr.
The Visitor Center is Goonies Day HQ,
where you can get information on events
of the day and pick up your official 2018
Goonies Day badge. The Chamber also runs
the website thegoondocks.org, which has all
of the information you need.
Don’t forget to hashtag your adventures
with #GooniesDay2018 to share them with

Down here, it’s our time: Large, caricature-esque cutouts of the Goonies gang are on display at the Oregon Film Museum. As Andy would say,
“Where’s Brand?” To the left is The Corey Connection, a Six-Degrees-of-Kevin-Bacon-style bulletin board branching out of the filmography of
Corey Feldman. The loose sheets of paper hanging around the room are messages left by visitors concerning all things Goonie.
other fans on the website’s gallery.
Can’t miss: Oregon Film Museum, 732
Duane St.
Located in the old Clatsop County
Jail where the movie’s opening jailbreak
sequence was filmed, the Oregon Film
Museum has a ton of Goonies’ memorabilia,
including a reproduction of Data’s costume
and inventions, a preserved jail cell and, of
course, the Fratellis’ black Jeep is parked
outside, complete with bullet holes. The gift
shop is packed with tons of Goonies’ garb.
The Oregon Film Museum “Shot In Asto-
ria” driving tour, on board The Glam Tram,
will be an hour-long adventure featuring
behind-the-scenes information, trivia, sound,
fun and candy being thrown at participants,
according to tour host McAndrew Burns,
executive director of the Clatsop County
Historical Society.
A restored 1963 Los Angeles Zoo peo-
ple-mover, the Tram takes riders to local
spots featured in movies like “The Goonies,”
“Short Circuit,” “Black Stallion” and more.
Advanced reservations are recommend-
ed and can be made through the museum.
The trip is limited to 14 people. Tours take
place 10 a.m. 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3
p.m. Saturday, June 9. The cost is $15 per
person.
Best place to stay: Astoria Riverwalk
Inn, 400 Industry St.
Once known as the Red Lion-Thunder-
bird Motor Inn, this pleasant hotel right
on the marina became the de facto offices
and living quarters for the Hollywood crew
during the film’s production. Spielberg
even slept in one of their 115 rooms.
Best way to get away from the Fratel-
lis: Copper Bones Virtual 5K, anywhere.
In lieu of an organized run this year, the
Chamber has partnered with Virtual Pace
Series to put together a 5K run/walk that
anyone from around the world can join in
from anywhere, and at any time, June 7.
Complete the task and receive a skull key
trophy based on the one in the film.
Check out Haystock Rock and Ecola
State Park in Cannon Beach, two other im-
portant filming locations, for miles of trails.
Registration info is at thegoondocks.org.
More merch: Accent Ink, 1125 Com-
mercial St.
The first day this screen printing and
embroidery shop opened its doors has
the distinction of being the massive 2015
Goonies Day celebration of the film’s 30th
anniversary.
“At first, we didn’t want to be ‘The
Goonies’ t-shirt shop in Astoria,” owner
Dave Rhoadarmer said. “But now we are
totally embracing it. And, of course, they
are the most popular designs.” Unique
t-shirt designs, coffee mugs and other
“Never Say Die” ephemera are available.
Dance it off at the lanes: Lower Co-
lumbia Bowl, 826 Marine Drive
Cosmic bowling gets an ’80s music
makeover Saturday, June 9, at Astoria’s
favorite lanes, which was also a filming
location for the movie’s opening sequence.
Dig on some Cyndi Lauper and Prince, and
don’t forget to take a selfie in the window
where Chunk watched the Fratellis’ car
chase! CW
