4 // COASTWEEKEND.COM GET YOUR GOON ON JUNE 7 THROUGH 10 WITH ACTIVITIES ON THE NORTH COAST By RYAN HUME FOR COAST WEEKEND oonies never say die, and fans of this beloved ’80s cult classic have taken that message to heart, flocking to the North Coast’s filming locations year after year. Yes, Thursday, June 7, is Goonies Day again! Why June 7? The Steven Spielberg-pro- duced film, shot on location in Astoria and around Cannon Beach, landed in theaters on that day in 1985, and generations of viewers have since fallen in love with Mikey, Mouth, Data and Chunk and the rest of the gang. In 2010, then-mayor Willis Van Dusen officially declared June 7 Goonies Day in Astoria — though, by then, hordes of fans had already been making the pilgrimage to the city for years. According to Regina Willkie at the Asto- ria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Conference, which handles Goonies Day events, “We don’t have a lot of major activities planned since this isn’t a five-year anniversary year.” The next major anniversary, the film’s 35th, is still a few years away, in 2020. So, with the famed Goonies’ house off-limits to fans and other filming locations (like Warren Field) now gone, what’s a Goonie gotta do to get their Goon on around here? Let this quick guide direct you to the best Goonies happenings in the area. You and your crew of misfits will surely have plenty of reason to Truffle Shuffle to the tune of Cyndi Lauper.
