5A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 2018 Buehler wins GOP nomination for governor Hoyle becomes Bureau of Labor and Industries commissioner Bend doctor set to face Gov. Brown in November By PARIS ACHEN Capital Bureau WILSONVILLE — State Rep. Knute Bue- hler won the GOP nomination for governor Tuesday and will face Gov. Kate Brown in November. “The change we all need has started with victory tonight and the road to a better Oregon begins tomorrow in earnest,” Buehler said to a crowd of 200 supporters. Supporters erupted in cheers and applause just after 8 p.m. at the McMenamins Old Church & Pub, where the state representative from Bend hosted a watch party. Buehler — at 47 percent of the vote — defeated Bend businessman Sam Carpenter, who gleaned 29 percent, and Portland retired Navy pilot Greg Wooldridge, who garnered about 19 percent. Brown easily cinched the Democratic nomination with 81 percent of the vote. Buehler spoke to the crowd shortly before the initial results arrived and thanked them for their support in laying the groundwork for seeking the nomination for the past four years. “Tonight is the first step in a long journey,” he said. Kate Firmin of Lake Oswego said she was relieved when Buehler announced his plan to run because his moderate platform appealed to her. “I am right in the middle of the road, and I think that most Oregonians fall in that spot, yet because we have so few people registered for primaries it feels like all of the candidates are far to the right or far to the left, so I am just excited that we have someone running for governor who is right in the middle who I think represents the views of most Oregonians,” Firmin said. Despite a large Democratic majority in the state, Buehler said he is confident he can win independents and Democrats. “I’ve run two difficult elections and won in a district that is overwhelmingly Democratic actually more Democratic than the state as a whole,” Buehler said. “With our experience with winning in a very Democratic district in Bend combined with win- ning experiences in other states, I am confident that can occur in Oregon. If it can happen in states like Massachusetts and Maryland, it can happen here.” By MOLLY HARBARGER The Oregonian Jamie Valdez/Portland Tribune Knute Buehler celebrates with supporters after winning the Republican nomination for governor in Tuesday’s primary election. Brown’s campaign responded that Brown has supported bipartisan legislation that Buehler opposed. “Gov. Brown has proven herself as a biparti- san leader,” said Christian Gaston, a spokesman for her campaign. “The state’s largest transpor- tation package, funding for the Oregon Health Plan and the bill to establish the employer incen- tive fund to address our pension liability all passed with bipartisan support. Buehler voted against them all.” The election results countered the results of a poll} last week that suggested the race between Buehler and Carpenter was much closer. The poll was conducted by a Democratic polling firm and was first published by POLITICO. Soon after the poll was released, Buehler and Wooldridge released attack ads against Carpen- ter, suggesting he might be a bigger threat than initially perceived. The candidates’ first and last joint debate on the Lars Larson Show Friday highlighted some of the differences between the candidates. Car- penter modeled his platform after that of Pres- ident Donald Trump and adopted the motto, “Make Oregon Great Again.” Brown’s campaign on Tuesday announced that she would agree to three debates with the GOP nominee. She also agreed to jointly appear with the nominee at a number of newspaper edi- torial board endorsement meetings, including at the Portland Tribune. Buehler has focused on fiscal conserva- tism. His pro-choice stance and support of leg- islation to make contraceptives more accessible prompted anti-abortion activists to seek an alter- native in the primary. Buehler raised $1.3 million in the first four months of the year but goes into the general election with less than $500,000, according to campaign finance records. He spent heavily in the two weeks before the election on attack ads against Carpenter. He faces a challenge in catch- ing up with Brown’s campaign stores. She had $3.8 million on hand as of Tuesday. Wooldridge’s campaign thanked supporters and called on Republicans to unite behind Bue- hler after the difficult primary. “Oregonians are demanding greatness from our government ,and our governor has totally failed,” Wooldridge said in a statement. “Gov. Kate Brown’s failed leadership has run the ship of Oregon aground. Dr. Knute Buehler is our party’s nominee, and it’s time to back him and demand change.” The Capital Bureau is a collaboration between EO Media Group and Pamplin Media Group. Val Hoyle will take the helm of the Ore- gon Bureau of Labor and Industries after claiming 51 percent of the vote Tuesday. Hoyle, a former Democratic state repre- sentative with a family history of union orga- nizing, outraised Tualatin Mayor Lou Ogden in the surprisingly competitive race. Though the office is nonpartisan, the candidates traded partisan insults and lobbed unsubstan- tiated allegations of campaign violations at the other. Ogden had 36 per- cent of the vote. Hoyle, 54, said she wants to make Ore- gon a friendlier place for small businesses by cracking down on bad actors, as well as invest more in trade skills and job train- Val ing for youth. She also Hoyle wants to help reorient the state’s workforce to keep pace with advances in technology and larger employment shifts, such as the move from unionized taxi driver to freelance ride-hailing work. Hoyle served as the House majority leader in the state Legislature before launch- ing an unsuccessful run for secretary of state in 2016. But the BOLI job is the one she’s made for, she said. Hoyle said that she plans to be as dogged as her Democratic predecessor, Brad Ava- kian, who drew criticism for his aggressive pursuit of civil rights cases. Hoyle has not taken a position on the same-sex marriage discrimination verdict against Sweet Cakes by Melissa, but said she thinks that’s an important part of the office. Ogden would have been the first Repub- lican to hold the office since 2002. He called many of Avakian’s civil rights cases “overreaching.” Mitchell: ‘I think that my message just resonated with voters’ Continued from Page 1A The three sought to replace state Rep. Deborah Boone, D-Cannon Beach, who will retire when her seventh term ends in January. Mitchell received 41 per- cent of the vote to Orr’s 29 percent and Josi’s 29 per- cent, according to unofficial results. “I think that my message just resonated with voters,” Mitchell said of the strong showing in her first campaign. She credited volunteers for helping to get her name and message out after filing just before the deadline in March. She said she person- ally knocked on more than 3,000 doors. Mitchell will face Republi- can Vineeta Lower, a teacher, and Independent Brian Hal- vorsen, a progressive orga- nizer, in the November elec- MORE ONLINE • Election results: View results at tinyurl.com/ybnp5cbc tion. Josi gathered nearly $115,000 in donations as of Tuesday, including the backing of Boone and state Sen. Betsy Johnson, D-Scappoose. In his concession speech, Orr, who was edging Josi for second place, congratulated Mitchell. “I still wonder why this election had corporations and organizations from around Oregon campaigning for my opponents,” he said. “Now it’s less than $17,000. Forest management prac- tices became a focal point of the primary. Mitchell and Orr had both called for limits on tim- ber harvesting when it could have negative environmental effects. Josi, who chairs the Forest Land Trust Advisory Committee, called for max- imizing timber harvests and said environmental concerns have been overstated.
