And for the fourth time this season, the Lady Warriors pounded the Royals, 17-1, to secure a top-three finish in the league and a spot in the state playoffs. The Warriors advance to play Clatskanie for the league’s No. 2 seed, 5 p.m. Thursday at Clatskanie. Warrenton defeated Port- land Christian three times in the league season, by scores of 11-1, 19-2 and 33-3. In Tuesday’s fourth meet- ing, Warrenton led 16-0 after just three innings. Warrior pitcher Niqui Blodgett pitched a one-hitter, with eight strikeouts and one walk. Warrenton had 10 hits with 10 walks and three hit batters. Rachel Dyer led the attack with three hits, while Blodgett drove in four runs and Natalie Duncan had a double. Melia Kapua had just one hit, but drove in three runs. Seaside finishes fifth The Daily Astorian R EDMOND — For the fourth time in the last five years, a team from the Cowapa League grabbed the top spot in the Class 4A boys golf state tournament. And it was a different team, as Valley Catholic became the third Cowapa school to win a state title since 2014. Seaside won state champion- ships in 2014 and ‘15, and Scap- poose won last year’s title. The Valiants improved Mon- day’s first round score by four strokes Tuesday, to finish with a 630 team score, as final round action wrapped up at the Eagle Crest Ridge Course in Redmond. It would have been nice to bring home a trophy, but to be in con- tention with five guys that have never played in a state tourna- ment is still quite a feat. “The experience of playing in a state tournament is a huge advantage as the teams that beat us all had most of their players back from last year’s tournament, where they finished first, second, third and sixth,” he said. “So it was a good finish to a great sea- son, and next year we will have some experience. While we lose Jackson, who finished just two strokes out of the top 10, we now have three of the top 10 returning players for next year in Connor, Samson and Curtis.” Rainier blanks Astoria, 5-0 The Daily Astorian A pair of co-league champi- ons tuned up for the state playoffs with a nonleague game Tuesday at Tapiola Park, where Astoria hosted Rainier. And the Colum- bians — co-league champs of the Lewis & Clark League — got the best of Cowapa League co-champ Astoria, 5-0. Rainier pitcher Austin Cantrell threw six-and-a-third innings, allowing just two hits with nine strikeouts and four walks to pick up the win. Dawson Carr pitched the final outs. The Columbians managed six hits off five Astoria pitchers. Danny Johnson and Zac Pat- terson had the only hits for Asto- ria, while Tanner Chapman had two hits and Cantrell drove in two runs for the Columbians. Leading 1-0 through four innings, Rainier’s Joey Tripp drew a one-out walk in the top of the fifth, which was followed by two walks. Cantrell singled to score Tripp, and Darian Guerr scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Columbians a 3-0 lead. Rainier defeats Astoria at CMH The Daily Astorian Rainier defeated Astoria 12-1 Tuesday in a nonleague softball game at CMH Field. The contest served as a tune-up for the Lady Fishermen, who play Friday at 4 p.m, in a 4A regional play-in game at Elmira. Rainier — champions of the Lewis & Clark League and two- time defending state champions at the 3A level, are looking for a return to the 3A state champion- ship game for the third year in a row. The Columbians host Scio for a nonleague game Thursday.
