6 // COASTWEEKEND.COM Music meets poetry in Cannon Beach CANNON BEACH — The Cannon Beach History Center & Museum will put on a free community concert 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17. The pro- gram is titled “Where Words and Music Meet.” Chris Lee and Colleen O’Brien have presented this chamber jazz program in more than 150 venues throughout the U.S. They combine the vibraphone, cello and voice with the poetry of Jack Kerouac, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, Emily Dick- inson, Rumi and more. The chamber jazz duo will include a slide show of photographs and chosen portions of the poems. Lee and O’Brien have performed together for more than 30 years. They grew up about a mile from each other in Portland and met in 1980 when O’Brien asked Lee to play drums in a quartet she was forming. The meeting of kindred musical spirits is always a fortunate encounter, and the two soon realized they had more in common as soul mates. The museum is hosting this event as a thank-you to the community of Cannon Beach and beyond. Jazz up your Mother’s Day RAYMOND, WASH. — Sunday Afternoon Live brings jazz great Gail Pettis to the historic Raymond Theatre at 2 p.m. on Mother’s Day — Sunday, May 13. Once an orthodontist, Pettis now graces the stage in the Pacific Northwest as a premier jazz artist . Singing classical music and hymns in her youth, a 1996 workshop launched her into a career of jazz singing and a love of live performance. Pettis now performs throughout the Dan Weber, a ‘mid-life overnight sensation,’ performs in Long Beach U.S., and has also performed in Europe, Russia and the Far East. Her soulful singing connects with her audience on an emotional level. Trained by Greta Matassa and two-time winner of the Northwest Vocalist of the Year Award by the Earshot Jazz Society, Pettis combines her warm contralto with the talents of Darin Clendenin on piano, Clipper Anderson on bass and Brad Boal on drums. Pettis croons love songs as well as fresh arrangements of popular standards. She is also a favorite on KMKX jazz radio. An ex-park ranger, We- ber follows in the tradition of songwriting legends, entertaining audiences with energetic performances and telling hilarious true stories from the many roads he’s traveled. Songs from his debut album, “Ash and Bone,” received accolades from American Songwriter Magazine and the Great American Songwriting Contest. The U.K.’s Mav- erick Magazine gave the album four stars. A gifted storyteller and inspired performer, Weber won third place in the prestigious Woody Guthrie Songwriting Competition and the Silver Award in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest in 2013. He was a 2012 finalist in the legendary Kerrville New Folk com- petition as well as the 2010 Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest, along with garnering several other regional and national honors.
