The Braves and Fisher- men remained locked in a first- place tie, as both scored wins Monday in Clatsop County. While Banks was scoring a 10-0 victory at Seaside, the Fishermen knocked off Tilla- mook 13-2 at Tapiola Park. Astoria plays Tuesday at Seaside, and Banks travels to Valley Catholic for a Wednes- day game. The Fishermen and Braves close the league season Friday at Banks. Astoria’s Trey Hageman — the leading candidate for Cow- apa League Player of the Year — was 3-for-4 at the plate, with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. He also threw a complete five-inning game, allowing five hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Astoria had nine hits off two Tillamook pitchers, while the Cheesemakers helped Astoria’s cause with five errors in the field. The Fishermen scored 10 runs in the second inning to secure the win. The Daily Astorian BANKS — The Seaside boys golf team is sitting in third place after one round of the District 1 regional golf tournament, which concludes Tuesday at Quail Valley Golf Course. Valley Catholic leads with a 310 team score, and Scap- poose is second at 332. The Gulls carded a 347 in the opening round to give the Cowapa League teams the top three spots after Day 1. The top three teams qual- ify for next week’s state tour- nament. Crook County is in fourth at 369, 22 strokes behind Seaside, followed by Astoria (385), Banks (386), Molalla (387), Tillamook (392) and Corbett (423). Tillamook’s Carter Lee is atop the individual leader- board with a 73, with Valley Catholic’s Peter Boileau at 74. Seaside freshman Curtis Kunde is eighth with a first- round 81. Jackson Kunde is 12th with an 85, followed by Samson Sibony (90), Connor Merrell (91) and Mason Sha- mion (97). “We came into today with a goal of getting back to the state tournament,” said Sea- side coach Jim Poetsch. “And while we didn’t score very well, we put ourselves in a good position to meet that goal. We’d like to score a little better (Tuesday), but if we shoot the same and fin- ish in the top three we will have done what we set out to accomplish this week. “Curtis played a great round today,” he said. “Usu- ally it is the freshmen that succumb to the pressure of their first regional tourna- ment, but he was the one who carried us today. The four upperclassmen all shot their season highs today.” Jackson Kunde “played a Jekyll and Hyde round today,” Poetsch said. “He was even-par through six holes and leading the tourna- ment. After a double bogey on the seventh he was still in the lead, but he let it get to him and he lost 12 strokes on the next six holes. After regaining his composure, he went on to play the final six holes in one-over par.” Astoria had four golf- ers in the 90s in Monday’s round, led by Josh Olson with a 93. Connor Long shot a 96, followed by Dylan Altheide-Nielson (97), Tay- lor Palmberg (99) and Tryton Matlock (110). In the girls’ tournament — also at Quail Valley — the Astoria Lady Fishermen are in fourth place in the team standings, just outside the top three state qualifying spots. Astoria shot a season-best 428 team score, beating their previous best by 25 shots. Four players shot per- sonal best scores, includ- ing Samantha Hemsley (91), Sarah Lertora (118), Sierra Adams (120) and Gracie Cummings (133). Jenna Tra- vers posted a 99. US blanks Germany at hockey worlds Canada, Russia rout opponents By KAREL JANICEK Associated Press SOFTBALL H ERNING, Denmark — The United States beat Germany 3-0 to stay unbeaten and Rus- sia shut out a third straight opponent at the world ice hockey champion- ship on Monday. Russia routed Belarus 6-0. Canada allowed Denmark to score on the way to another big win, 7-1, and defending champion Swe- den kept cruising with a 4-0 win against France. U.S. captain Patrick Kane broke the deadlock against Germany and assisted on the other two goals in the hard-fought Group B game in Herning. Germany goalie Niklas Treutle didn’t allow the U.S. to score from 11 shots on goal in the first period. Treutle’s teammates also killed three penalties in the second period. Kane finally made the breakthrough mid- way through the game on another power play with a one-timer to the roof of the net. “It was a great pass from Johnny (Gaudreau), it was fun to be on the Banks blanks Seaside, 10-0 SEASIDE — Banks built a quick 5-0 lead Monday on its way to a 10-0 Cowapa League baseball win over Seaside at Broadway Field. The Braves collected 11 hits, while Banks starter Blake Gobel silenced the Sea- side bats to help the Braves remain in a first-place tie with Astoria. Gobel had just one strike- out, but he had the Seaside batters off-balance and hitting lots of fly balls. The Gulls had four base hits, while Gobel walked one and threw six solid innings (59 pitches) before giving way to Tyler Lilly in the seventh. Meanwhile, the Braves scored two runs in the first and added three in the second, highlighted by a two-run sin- gle from Dakota Bunn. Hayden Vandehey had three singles for Banks, and also drove in three runs. Seaside pitchers Payton Westerholm and Gage McFad- den combined for three strike- outs and four walks. Seahawks sign 5 tryout players following rookie camp Associated Press RENTON, Wash. — The Seat- tle Seahawks have signed five tryout players following their rookie mini- camp, highlighted by wide receiver Damore’ea Stringfellow. Seattle announced the roster moves Monday. Stringfellow started his col- lege career at Washington before being dismissed from the team and finish- ing at Mississippi. Stringfellow caught 46 passes for 716 yards and six touch- downs in his final year at Ole Miss. He was originally signed by Miami before being released and spent part of last year on the New York Jets practice squad. Seattle also signed free safety Tevon Mutcherson, center Marcus Henry, and tackles Nick Callender and Avery Young. Mutcherson played col- legiately at Central Florida with Sea- hawks Shaquill and Shaquem Grif- fin, and spent part of last season with Houston. Seattle released wide receivers Ka’Raun White and Taj Williams, line- backers Jason Hall and Paul Dawson, and center Brad Lundblade. Caps drop Penguins in OT to advance to conference finals Associated Press PITTSBURGH — A cathartic celebration 20 years in the making began with a poke of Evgeny Kuznetsov’s stick. It built as the puck that Kuznetsov tapped away from Sidney Crosby made its way to Washington Cap- itals teammate Alexander Ovechkin. It neared its crescendo as Ovechkin flipped it back to Kuznetsov, who at this point had split two Penguins and was streaking toward the Pittsburgh net. And it culminated jubilantly and unexpectedly in the corner moments later, with the puck in the net and Kuznetsov’s teammates mobbing him after he ended two decades of frustration with a flick of the Russian’s wrist.
