The Fishermen took over sole possession of first place following a 5-4 win Monday over Banks at CMH Field. It was Astoria’s second win in four days over the No. 7-ranked Braves, whose three league losses have come against Astoria and Seaside. The Fishermen improve to 8-2 in league (11-5 overall), 4-1 at CMH Field and 3-2 at Tapiola Park. “Tapiola has been a great field to play on, and it’s a great setting, but for whatever reason our kids just prefer CMH,” said Astoria coach Glen Fromwiller. “Sometimes they just ask to play at CMH.” Monday’s win looked like it was going to be easier than it was, as the Fishermen battered the Braves all over the turf field in the first two innings. After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Fishermen answered with four runs in their first at-bat, with a pair of two-run base hits by Will Reed and Danny Johnson. Astoria had three doubles in the first inning, the first by Burke Mat- thews. After Reed’s two-run single, Josiah Hirsch doubled, then both runners scored on the first of two doubles by Johnson. A sacrifice fly by Reed scored Dylan Rush in the second inning, but that would be Astoria’s final run of the day. Banks took advantage of an error and a hit batter in the top of the fifth to score a run, cutting Astoria’s lead to 5-4. But the Braves left the bases loaded in the fifth, and stranded run- ners at second and third in the sixth. For the game, Banks left 10 runners on base. Rush, Colby Junes and Matthews did just enough on the mound to hold the Braves at four runs. “That (fifth) inning was stress- ful,” Fromwiller said. “But our pitchers did exactly what we needed today. Dylan’s pitch count was get- ting up there, so we had to take him out to have him available Friday. But Junes and Matthews did their part, and we had some strikeouts (seven combined) against a team that doesn’t strike out a lot.” The Fishermen may have seen the last of CMH Field for a while. Astoria’s five remaining games include four road contests. The Fish- ermen will travel Wednesday to Scappoose. Astoria also has road games at Valley Catholic, Seaside and Banks. “We can enjoy sole possession of first place for 24 hours, but then it’s back to work,” Fromwiller said. “There are no easy ones left.” Scappoose edges Seaside baseball The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — Scappoose pitchers Logan Travis and J.C. Gross scattered five hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks, lifting the Indians to a 7-2 Cowapa League baseball win Monday over Seaside at Broadway Field. It was the last visit to the North Coast as a member of the Cowapa League for the Indians, who move to the 5A level next season. And it was a big win in the standings for Scappoose, which improves to 6-4, while Seaside drops to 4-6. As the starting pitcher, Travis struck out eight and gave up four hits. Offensively, the Indians collected 10 hits off two Sea- side pitchers, including three hits by Breeler Mann. Jae S. Lee/Dallas Morning News Seahawks cornerback Shaquill Griffin, center, and Shaquem Griffin at the NFL draft. One-handed LB Griffin joins twin on Seahawks By TIM BOOTH Associated Press RENTON, Wash. — Shaquem Griffin had walked away from his cellphone, on his way to use the restroom, when it buzzed. His twin brother, Shaquill, recognized the 425 area code that flashed on the screen and started charging after his brother. “I think I was more scared of him tackling me in the bathroom and not knowing what was happening than anything,” Shaquem said. What already was the feel-good story of the NFL draft got an even better sto- rybook ending on Saturday when the Central Florida star linebacker, whose left hand was amputated when he was a child, was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round. The phone call from Seat- tle general manager John Schneider set off a wild cel- ebration within the Grif- fin family , which had gath- ered at a hotel in the Dallas area after Shaquem spent the first two days at the draft in Arlington, Texas, waiting for a phone call that never came. It was the Seahawks — the team that showed the most interest in Griffin from the start — who gave Shaquem the chance at his profes- sional aspirations and with it a chance to be reunited with his brother. Shaquill, who was a third- round pick by the Seahawks in 2017, became a starter in his rookie season. The broth- ers played together through- out their youth and at UCF before Shaquill entered the NFL a year earlier. “I couldn’t ask for any- thing (else) in the world than the opportunity to be back with him,” Shaquem said. Added Shaquill: “I was going to be happy no mat- ter what team that gave him the opportunity. At the end of the day that’s all I wanted for him: for a team to give him a shot and give him an oppor- tunity and take a chance on someone that is great.” Valiants win league title, Gulls tie for second place The Daily Astorian ANKS — For the first time since 2003, Cow- apa League boys golf has a champion other than Scappoose or Seaside. Valley Catholic won this year’s league tournament, as the Valiants shot a 318 team score Monday at Quail Valley Golf Course. The Indians and Gulls fin- ished in a second-place tie at 331. It was the second time this season that the two teams tied in a tournament. Both times, the Gulls won the potential tiebreaker with a better fifth score, as Mason Shamion shot an 87 to out- score the Indians’ fifth man, who had a 93. Banks finished fourth with a 356, followed by Astoria (377). Tillamook did not field a complete team, although Til- lamook’s Carter Lee defended his Cowapa League medalist title (his third) by shooting 77. Chase Elliott of Scap- poose tied with Valley Cath- olic’s Peter Boileau and Cole B Schmidlin for second place, one stroke behind Lee. There was a four-way tie for fifth at 81, with Seaside senior Jackson Kunde, Jake Gray of Scappoose and Valley Catholic’s Cole Heinsen and Andrew Plambeck. Round- ing out the all-league team was a tie for ninth with Sea- side freshman Curtis Kunde and Banks’ Liam Birr. Cur- tis Kunde is the first freshman to earn all-league for Seaside since Joel Bletscher in 2003. Dylan Althiede-Nielsen and Conner Long each shot 92 to lead Astoria. Taylor Palm- berg added a 95. “This was a very compet- itive tournament,” said Sea- side coach Jim Poetsch. “As I’ve said all year, Valley Cath- olic is the team to beat this year. They now have beaten us four times, but we are clos- ing the gap. We are also very close with Scappoose, each of us winning once and ending up tied the other two times we played. “On the individual side, every one of our players shot a score that would be good enough to get on the all-league team in most years,” he said. “But this isn’t most years. The Cowapa is a very tough league.” Jackson Kunde made the all-league team for the third year. “He was able to complete his round today with nothing worse than a bogey,” Poetsch said. “His brother Curtis only had one double-bogey and was able to offset it by chipping in for birdie on the second hole.” The Gulls “have done a good job of limiting big num- bers the past few weeks and our scores have shown that,” he said. “Now we need to take the next step and hit a few more putts. If we can do that, we will be as good as any team in the state.” All Cowapa teams will now compete in a regional tournament next week, to decide qualifying for the state tournament.
