2 // COASTWEEKEND.COM Freshen up downtown Astoria with ADHDA ASTORIA — Downtown Astoria is shaking off the winter doldrums and getting ready to present a bright new face to locals and visitors. Love Your Streets is the new name for an annual planting and clean-up day hosted by the Astoria Downtown Historic District Association (ADH- DA), and volunteers are needed. This communi- ty-building event is a chance for local families, friends and neighbors to engage in creating a refreshed downtown living space. Love Your Streets is set for Saturday, April 21, with two shifts to choose from: 9 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 4 p.m. There are plenty of fun opportunities for volunteers of all ages and abilities, from landscaping to clean-up. Separate teams will refresh the street planters with new flowers and shrubs, plant trees and clean unwanted stickers and graffiti from public areas. This year, the Bank of the Pacific is spon- soring a garden installation in the raised beds on 11th Street between Commercial and Duane streets. All participants will be treated to refresh- ments from Street 14 Cafe and other downtown eateries. To volunteer, sign up at signup.com/go/qQLOtpq. For more information, contact the ADHDA at office@astoriad- owntown.com or call 503-791-7940. Need a quick fix? Head to Repair Cafe ILLUSTRATION BY DON NISBETT REIGN ON, PARADES! ASTORIA — The next Re- pair Cafe will meet in the Fort George Blue Room, (enter through the Tap- room) 6 to 8 p.m. Wednes- day, April 25. Repair Cafe is dedicated to bringing people with broken stuff together with people who know how to fix it. Help us create a commu- nity around skill sharing, repairing and waste reduc- tion. Come to learn, watch or just let us fix your items. Our “fixers” can repair, sharpen, sew or give expert advice on most items: garden tools, clothing, computers, furniture, bicycles, power tools and household appliances. Plus, we offer knife and scissor sharpening. Help us with our goal to keep 2,000 pounds of broken items from entering our local landfill. We have scales to weigh your stuff and will keep a running tal- ly for each month’s efforts to reach that goal. The Fort George Blue Room is located at the corner of Duane and 14th streets in downtown Asto- ria. The Taproom will be open for beer and food pur- chases during the Repair Cafe. Find us on Facebook (facebook.com/repairasto- ria). Questions about an item for repair? Call 503-307- 0834.
