In a back-and-forth contest, Astoria led 3-0 after one inning and 4-0 in the top of the third. The Valiants rallied and took a 5-4 lead in the fifth, before the Fisher- men came back with three runs in the top of the sixth. Astoria tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, on a hit batter with the bases loaded. Valley Catholic had four errors in the field, while Astoria out-hit the Valiants 8 to 5. Astoria pitchers Dylan Rush, Colby Junes, Burke Matthews and Trey Hageman combined for seven strikeouts, five walks and two hit batters. The Fishermen stranded 11 baserunners, but Will Reed sparked the offensive attack, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and six RBIs. Reed belted a three-run homer in the first inning, and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for Astoria’s final run in the seventh. “I’d feel more comfortable if we had a bigger lead going into the seventh,” said Asto- ria coach Glen Fromwiller. “But the kids are doing fine. They’ve rebounded well. We had a tough nonleague season. They just don’t like losing.” Knappa downs Vernonia, 14-0 The Daily Astorian KNAPPA — The Knappa baseball team cruised to another easy league win, its ninth in a row going back to last year. In their 2018 Northwest League opener, the Loggers of Knappa pounded the Loggers of Vernonia, 14-0, Tuesday afternoon at Knappa. Knappa improves to 6-0 over- all, and has yet to play a full sev- en-inning game, outscoring oppo- nents 86-5. Pitchers Dale Takalo and Mason Hoover combined on a two-hit shutout, with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Knappa had just seven hits, but also relied on Ver- nonia’s eight errors. Kaleb Miller had a home run, drove in three runs and scored twice for Knappa, while Eli Takalo was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. After defeating Ilwaco 34-11 on March 26, a struggling Val- ley Catholic team has lost five in a row, in which the Valiants have given up 61 runs. Astoria pounded Valley Cath- olic 13-3 in a six-inning Cowapa League softball game Tuesday at CMH Field. Julia Norris tossed a complete game for the Lady Fish, allowing just three hits with 11 strikeouts and four walks. Astoria had 11 hits off the Val- iants, which included two triples by Jenna Barendse, a single and a double for Brooklynn Hank- witz, and two hits each for Kayla Helligso and McKailyn Rogers. The Daily Astorian Athletes of the meet The Daily Astorian E ight athletes from Astoria, Ilwaco, Jewell and Sea- side earned the Athletes of the Meet awards from the Daily Astorian Invitational track meet, held Monday at Seaside High School. Awards were given to two athletes each in track events (boys and girls) and field events (boys and girls). In track events for the girls, Ilwaco senior Eliza Bannister and Jew- ell senior Gabi Morales were recognized for their performances. Bannister won the 200 meters in a personal best 28.59, and took second in the 1,500 meters (5:34.08). Morales was second in the 300 hurdles (49.94) and third in the 100 hurdles (17.55). In the field events, Asto- ria senior Darian Hageman was the only athlete to win four individual events. The future Pac-12 ath- lete swept the jumps, clear- ing 10 feet to win the pole vault and 5-2 to win the high jump. The second award was given to Seaside junior Gretchen Hoekstre, who had the winning marks in the shot put (40-1) and dis- cus (129-8). On the boys’ side, one track award went to Sea- side senior Rafi Sibony, who won the 800 meters in 2:03.28, and ran the anchor leg for the winning 1,600-meter relay, outrac- ing Astoria to the finish line. Also honored was Ilwaco sophomore Dan- iel Whiting, who won the 1,500 meters (4:35.08) and the 3,000 meters (10:19.74). Both times were personal records. In field events, Astoria senior Tim Barnett swept the throws, with winning marks in the discus (153- 10), javelin (160-8) and shot put (50-9). Astoria teammate Michael Kee won the long jump, soaring a personal best 19-8. He also won an event on the track, run- ning 17.05 in the 110-meter hurdles. There were no meet records set, but Ilwaco’s Marcus Connor set a school record in the discus. His throw of 147 feet, 9 inches broke the previous record of 144-0, set by Larry Rich- ardson in 1968. Tillamook edges Seaside, 4-3 The Daily Astorian TILLAMOOK — Two teams searching for their first league win met on the field Tuesday. And the Seaside Gulls are still searching, after Tillamook scored its first league victory of the sea- son, a 4-3 decision over the Gulls. Seaside has lost three straight league games by a combined four runs. Knappa outlasts Vernonia in nine In his first meet of the season, Seaside’s Rafi Sibony won the 800 meters and anchored the winning long relay. KNAPPA — Knappa scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings, then scored again in the bottom of the ninth to win their Northwest League softball opener Tuesday afternoon, 5-4 over Vernonia. Both teams combined for just 12 hits, and only five runs came after a 2-2 first inning. Verno- nia left 14 runners on base, and Knappa stranded 11. Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Knappa’s Kaitlyn Truax reached on an error, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a passed ball to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth, Truax had a double, stole third with one out, and scored on Mikayla Rethati’s grounder. Madelynn Weaver pitched all nine innings for Knappa, allow- ing seven hits with eight strike- outs and seven walks. Knappa improves to 2-6 over- all. Vernonia falls to 1-7, and is scheduled to host a doubleheader Friday with Knappa. First-place Seaside rolls past Tillamook The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — The Seaside softball team continues to climb the state rankings and rack up the victories. The Lady Gulls improved to 8-1 overall, 3-0 atop the Cowapa League, with an easy 18-3 win Tuesday over Tillamook at Broad- way Field. Seaside scored six runs in the first inning and nine in the sec- ond. The Gulls collected 13 hits, while the Cheesemakers commit- ted six errors. Sequoia Shand and Sidney Owsley had three hits each for Seaside. Owsley had two tri- ples and three RBIs, while Shand had a triple and scored four runs. Viola Soprano had two hits and four RBIs. Seaside pitchers Jetta Ideue and Emma Meyer combined on a three-hitter, with Ideue striking out 10 with one walk. The Chee- semakers have lost seven in a row, and have been outscored 57-9 in their last three games.
