She bought a one-way train ticket to Oregon, a place she had thought of moving while living in Colorado. A friend from Cape May — home to a Coast Guard training facility — had trans- ferred to Astoria. Gittle connected with her on Facebook, stayed with her a couple of days and continued exploring the Pacific Northwest. Over the next year, Gittle would cross the country six times, riding trains, hitchhiking, helping friends move and going to weddings. She would finish visiting every U.S. state and go to New Zealand, Guatemala and Iceland. Gittle moved to the North Coast early last year, intent on getting a job in the environmen- tal sciences but unable to find a position. In New Jersey, she had hosted paint-and-sip parties as a fundraiser to pay for her dog’s surgery. She was asked to do the same at the Astoria Golf & Country Club and started holding monthly parties. When Paint with a Pint, a similar business in downtown Astoria, closed, Gittle went full steam and founded Proof in Painting. She hosts up to 40 painters the third Thursday of each month at the country club, along with private parties. “I’m totally mobile,” she said. “I can go to restaurants, bars, hotels, conference rooms.” Gittle set up a website — proofinpainting. com — and has been marketing her business. She also draws custom gift cards and crochets hats, cowls, scarves and other clothing accesso- ries, along with decorative octopuses, for sale online and at Maiden Astoria. While feeling content in Astoria and lay- ing down roots, Gittle said she remains open to change if the right opportunity comes along. “I guess I’m just always open to a new adventure,” she said. (Write on Seaside!), we didn’t really have a writing event like this in Seaside,” Moberg said. “One of our goals is for people to get a sense of how the writing pro- cess works.” Ousley said it was an inter- esting experience writing a story with audience participation in mind. “I wrote this story knowing it was going to belong to every- one. Sometimes when you write a novel you are writing it for your- self, but with this I wrote it with the audience in mind. It was fun putting in some of those details, wondering what names they will come up with,” she said. Holly Lorincz was one of the presenters to stray from the prompt, with a short story cen- tered around a 10-minute phone call between in-laws before a wed- ding day. While libraries weren’t a source of inspiration for this story, they inspired much of her love for writing in general, she said. Growing up in Clatskanie, Lorincz remembers spend- ing hours in the Seaside Public Library, reading and rereading one of her favorite books, “The Pillars of the Earth” by Ken Follett. “It was a small life, but I read all the time. I was always putting myself in other worlds,” Lorincz said. There she wrote her first book “Smart Mouth,” which eventually helped her launch into a career as a liter- ary consultant and collaborative writer for biographies and mem- oirs.
