PORTLAND — Knappa junior Luke Goozee was the highest placer from the North Coast in this week- end’s OSAA state wrestling meet, Thursday through Saturday at the Portland Memorial Coliseum. Culver won the 2A team title with 201.5 points, well ahead of sec- ond-place Central Linn (104), with Neah-Kah-Nie (63) a distant third. Knappa scored 20 points to tie for 16th with Elgin. As the No. 3-seeded wrestler at 132 pounds, Goozee opened with a 48-sec- ond pin over Lowell’s Kent McIntosh in the quarterfinals. He followed with another pin (3:45) in the semifinals, vs. Culver’s Cooper Becker. Facing Lowell junior Kasey Erwin in the title bout, Erwin scored a hard- earned 11-7 decision over Goozee. At 113 pounds, Knappa sopho- more Robert Pina scored a 12-9 deci- sion over Lowell’s Justin Corp to reach the semifinals, before losing by fall (3:23) to top-seed Hunter McIrvin of Central Linn. Pina lost in consolation to Pine Eagle freshman Cutter Tanaka, a 16-2 major decision. “Both Robert and Luke had a good tournament,” said Knappa coach Dan Owings. “Luke had his opponent (Erwin) in his last match for the cham- pionship on his back once, but was unable to pin him. “They represented Knappa well, for being only two of them and placing Knappa 16th,” he said. “I am already excited they will be back next year.” Gilbert takes third In the 3A tournament, Warrenton junior Kaden Gilbert took third at 182 pounds. Gilbert won by pin over River- side sophomore Ivan Salgado (1:22) in the first round, but lost a quarterfi- nal match by fall (4:44) to Lakeview’s Dylan Still. In consolation, Gilbert rebounded with a 6-3 decision over Jefferson’s Cody Adams. He followed with a pin (3:36) against Trace Prosser of Burns. Allen Chetwood, Marcus Con- ner and Cahlabhe Weldon were all fourth, with Ghannon Weldon and Joe Thompson taking fifth. Always a contender for the state team title at the 2B/1B level, Ilwaco finished tied for third with Adna, behind Tonasket and Reardan. Seaside swimmer Shipley earns medal at state meet By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian G RESHAM — Seaside’s Josh Shipley entered the state swim meet as the fourth-fastest swim- mer in the boys’ 50-yard freestyle event, with a time of 22.77 seconds. In Friday’s preliminary heat, the Gulls’ junior swam a 22.55, the third-best qualifying time. And in Saturday’s final, Shipley improved his time and place yet again, finishing the 50 freestyle in 22.10 seconds for a second-place medal. Shipley — a student at Warrenton High School who swims for the Gulls — was the only North Coast ath- lete to score points in the OSAA state meet, held Fri- day and Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham. His second-place finish behind Henley senior T.J. Morgan (22.10) earned Seaside five points in the final team standings. Newport won the boys’ team title with 74 points, well ahead of second-place North Bend (48). North Bend won the girls’ team championship with 66 points, edging Sweet Home (57). Tillamook was fifth and Newport seventh. Ironically, Shipley was unable to qualify for the finals in his top event, the 100-yard breaststroke, in which he had the second-fastest mark (1:02.31) enter- ing the meet. His time of 1:03.69 in the preliminaries was seventh (the top six advance to finals). Shipley may have been short of energy, after swim- ming the anchor leg for Seaside’s 200-yard freestyle relay in the prelims. “The 100 breaststroke was only about 10 minutes or so after the 200 free relay,” said Seaside coach Shane Spell. “Josh had an amazing anchor leg to help us move up from 11th to 10th, but that probably cost him some valuable energy for his individual race.” Other North Coast entries included the Astoria girls 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay squad of seniors Jazzy King and Megan Schacher, and freshmen Grace Peeler and Tori Smith. The Lady Fishermen were disqualified in the pre- liminaries of the first event, the medley relay. Astoria finished eighth (1:50.13) in the prelims of the 200 free- style relay. Individually, Smith was seventh in qualifying for the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.06) and eighth in the pre- liminary of the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.40). Peeler was 11th in qualifying for the 200-yard freestyle. Elsewhere, Tillamook freshman Nina Zweifel won the backstroke in a state meet record time of 57.45 seconds. Knights overcome On to state for Jewell Knappa boys, 64-44 Lady Jays hoops team The Daily Astorian FOREST GROVE — The Knappa Loggers played their final tune-up before beginning their state playoff run, as they squared off with Columbia Christian in a seeding game Saturday night in Forest Grove. And after losing at Knappa less than two weeks earlier, the Knights won Round 3, scoring a 64-44 win over the Loggers to gain the Northwest League’s No. 1 seed to state. The rankings did not change for either team, and both will host state playoff games. Knappa hosts Reed- sport at 6 p.m. Friday, with the win- ner to face either Vernonia or Mon- roe in a quarterfinal game March 1 in Pendleton. Hageman draws No. 1 In the Class 4A meet, Astoria senior Trey Hageman drew the No. 1 seed wrestler at 160 pounds — Bak- er’s Clay Keller, who scored a fall over Hageman in 1:58. Hageman was bounced to consolation, where he lost by a pin (2:17) to Yamhill-Carlton’s Tabor Magnuson. Ilwaco girls avoid upset, beat Napavine As of Monday morning, Feb. 19 TOP 10 MEDAL WINNERS At 195, Warrenton freshman Sam Irwin was 0-2. After a first round bye at 285, Warrior senior Beau Reynolds lost by fall to Vale’s Rolando Vasquez, but bounced back with a fall (1:39) over freshman Daniel Herinckx of Rogue River. Reynolds lost to Rogue River’s Gabe Echaide in a 43-second pin. Meanwhile, the Knights had to overcome a two games-in-three days stretch to win their second straight district title. The teams tied for the Northwest League title, with Knappa taking the first spot in a tie-breaker. The No. 2-ranked Knights had to play Vernonia in a league play- off last Thursday (winning a close game, 48-37) before facing the No. 3-ranked Loggers in Saturday’s playoff. The game appeared headed for a repeat of last year’s district title game, won by Columbia Christian on the same court, 39-36. The Knights held a 24-20 halftime lead this time around, then erupted for 23 points in the third quarter to build a 47-34 advantage heading into the final period. The Daily Astorian SALEM — The Jewell Lady Jays are in the state playoffs, and just two wins away from a berth in the state tournament, after going 1-1 in the Casco League playoffs last week at Corban University in Salem. Jewell opened with a 25-16 win Friday over Crosshill Christian, before falling Saturday to Perrydale, 47-24, for the third time this season in the league’s championship game. Ranked 24th at the Class 1A level, Jewell (14-8 overall) hosts 19th-ranked Southwest Christian (17-8) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Perrydale won the league cham- pionship game by breaking an 18-18 tie late in the first half, and outscoring Jewell 22-6 in the second half. Emma Guillen had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Jewell. Sydney Perkins had 13 points, Syd- ney Lawrence scored 12 and Kenzy Lawrence added 10 for Perrydale. After scoring just 16 points in their previous game at Crosshill (Feb. 6), the Jays erupted for 25 points in Fri- day’s win. Crosshill led 6-1 after one quarter, before Jewell went on a decisive 15-9 run over the second and third quarters. “It was not a real pretty game, but the girls kept clawing and played hard,” Jewell coach Mark Fick said of his team. “We got the second spot (to state), and we haven’t been there in a long time.” Gabi Morales led Jewell with 15 points, nine rebounds and six steals, and Guillen added five points and 10 boards. CHEHALIS, Wash. — With Ilwaco down by two, Erika Glenn stole a sideline inbound pass and got the ball to an open Eliza Ban- nister. Bannister evaluated her options, dribbled left, pulled up and hit a three with 6.8 seconds remaining. It was the winning shot — cap- ping Ilwaco’s comeback from down 10 with under four minutes to go — and beat Central League superpower Napavine 49-48. Napavine started the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run to lead 43-33, but star Melissa Lee fouled out during that stretch. Ebby McMul- len’s tough shot from the top of the key started Ilwaco’s comeback. McMullen followed with a diving save of an offensive rebound and a pass to Glenn, who nailed a huge three to cut it to 43-38 with 2:48. McMullen preserved another offen- sive rebound on the next posses- sion, leading to a wide-open Ban- nister three on a baseline inbounds play, cutting the lead to two. After a Mollie Olson three- point play pushed the Tigers’ lead back to five, Glenn buried another three with 1:47 left. Bannister fouled Olson going for a steal, but Olson missed the front end, giving Ilwaco a chance to tie. Glenn drove into the paint and found Made- line Jacobson open from about 12 feet for a bank shot with 1:17 remaining. Olson gave Napavine a 48-46 lead with 28 seconds left, scoring in transition after Makenzie Kaech missed a fast-break shot off a steal. Glenn then turned it over with 15.1 seconds left, and Ilwaco’s chances were again slipping away. But fre- netic Ilwaco pressure against the sideline inbounds pass forced two straight Tiger timeouts, as nobody could get open to receive a pass. On the third try, Erika Glenn pounced on the pass, dived on the floor and got it to Bannister, who added another clutch three-point shot to her resume.
