The memo, prepared by Republicans on the House intelligence committee, says there was “a troubling breakdown of legal processes” in the Russia investigation. President Donald Trump, who advocated for the memo’s release over the fierce objections of the Justice Department and the FBI, told report- ers the document shows “a lot of people should be ashamed of themselves.” “I think it’s terrible,” Trump said. “You want to know the truth. I think it’s a disgrace. What’s going on in this country, I think it’s a disgrace.” The memo, which the FBI has said is inac- curate and missing critical context, asserts that current and former FBI and Justice Department leaders signed off on a surveillance warrant to monitor communications of a former Trump campaign associate. The document also asserts that opposition research, conducted by a British spy and funded in part by the Democratic National Commit- tee and Clinton campaign, formed a critical basis for the allegations contained in the warrant application. Trump’s approval of the memo release set up a clash with the man he picked to lead the FBI, Christopher Wray, after firing James Comey as agency director. It also seemed at odds with House Speaker Paul Ryan who said a day earlier “this memo is not an indictment of the FBI or the Department of Justice.” Comey stood up for the bureau’s position against the document’s disclosure and took aim at unnamed people he calls “weasels and liars.” “All should appreciate the FBI speaking up. I wish more of our leaders would,” Comey tweeted Thursday night. UN: 90 migrants feared drowned after boat capsizes off Libya GENEVA — About 90 people were feared drowned after a smuggler’s boat mostly carry- ing Pakistani migrants capsized off Libya’s coast early today, the U.N.’s migration agency said. Victims’ father tries to attack Nassar in courtroom CHARLOTTE, Mich. — A father of three victims of Larry Nassar rushed and tried to attack the disgraced former sports doctor today during a sentencing hearing in Michigan, after the judge declined his request for “five minutes” alone with the “demon” in a locked room. He was blocked by an attorney and tackled by sheriff’s deputies. Two of the man’s daughters had just told Judge Janice Cunningham that they and another sister had been sexually abused by Nassar under the guise of medical treatment. Their father, Randall Margraves, later addressed the court and lunged at Nassar, who was sitting nearby. Margraves apologized, and Cunningham said a punishment isn’t appropriate based on the crimes committed by Nassar and the anguish felt by families. But she also said it’s wrong to “combat assault with assault.” The incident occurred during the third and final sentencing hearing for Nassar on sexual abuse charges. The charges in this case focus on his work with Twistars, an elite Michigan gymnastics club. More than 30 victims have given statements so far during the hearing, which began Wednesday and is expected to stretch into next week. During a similar hearing that ended last week, more than 150 girls and women came for- ward to say Nassar abused them under the guise of medical treatment while he worked with Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics. He was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison in that case. He had already been sentenced to 60 years in prison on child pornogra- phy charges. ing information from its partner agencies. LOS ANGELES — Jordan Valenzuela was in class when he heard the bang, and then the screaming. In a classroom next door, a 15-year-old boy had been shot in the head, a 15-year-old girl was shot in the wrist and several others were struck by broken glass. Jordan said that his 12-year-old classmate at Salvador B. Castro Middle School told him it was an accident. The sobbing girl told him: “I didn’t mean to. I had the gun in my backpack and I didn’t know it was loaded and my backpack fell and the gun went off,’” the seventh-grader said. The shooting was reported just before 9 a.m. Thursday at the school, which has about 365 stu- dents in grades 6-8. Police interviewed the girl and agreed it was an accident. Thursday evening, long hours after chaos and panic had subsided, the girl was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of negli- gently discharging a firearm on school grounds. Police haven’t said from where the girl got the semi-automatic handgun or why she brought it to the downtown campus. Five people were injured in the shooting. The most seriously hurt was the boy shot in the head, but doctors said the bullet didn’t hit anything vital or life-threatening. He is expected to recover. New witnesses emerge in actress Wood’s 1981 drowning LOS ANGELES — New witnesses have emerged in the 1981 drowning of actress Natalie Wood, prompting investigators to deem it a “sus- picious death” and name her former husband, 87-year-old actor Robert Wagner, a “person of interest,” Los Angeles sheriff’s officials said. For nearly four decades, mystery and specula- tion have swirled around the death of the actress who was nominated for three Academy Awards and starred in “West Side Story” and “Rebel Without a Cause.” She was on a yacht with Wagner, actor Chris- topher Walken and the boat captain on Thanks- giving weekend of 1981. After a night of drink- ing, her body was found floating in the waters off Southern California’s Catalina Island. She was 43. Investigators initially ruled it an accident but reopened the case in 2011 to see whether Wagner or anyone else played a role after the boat’s cap- tain said he heard the couple arguing the night of her disappearance.
