Schmitt joined the hos- pital’s administrative team a year ago. He will work closely with CEO Erik Thorsen and a yet-to-be- named chief operations officer. Schmitt, his wife and their two young sons moved to the North Coast from Redbud, Illinois, where he was the chief financial offi- cer for a critical access hos- pital. He grew up in Lou- isville, Kentucky, and received his bachelor’s in accounting from the Uni- versity of Kentucky. He spent six years working at a 365-bed hospital near St. Louis, Missouri, while earning a master’s with a concentration in finance from St. Louis University. “We were fortunate enough to have an oppor- tunity at CMH presented to us. The incident occurred just before 8 p.m. as the man, 22, was strolling along Sec- ond Street near City Hall. He told police that another man approached him, brandished what appeared to be a hand- gun and demanded his wallet. The gunman then allegedly took the wallet, which did not have any cash inside it, before fleeing westbound. Police responded to the scene shortly after but were unable to locate a suspect. Army seeks comment on dredge spoil sites The Daily Astorian The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking pub- lic comments on a plan to deposit dredge spoils from the Columbia River near East Sand Island and the North Head Lighthouse in Pacific County, Washington. Spoils would be played on the southern shore of East Sand Island, a thin east-west band of dredge deposits near the entrance to Baker Bay on the Ore- gon-Washington border. The Army Corps would selectively remove pil- ings and rock structures on the island and place about 80,000 cubic yards of mate- rial later this year to address an area of erosion to pre- vent the river from breach- ing through the island. The proposed in-wa- ter dredge deposit site near the North Head Lighthouse is necessary to prevent the Stranded turtle dies The Daily Astorian A female olive ridley sea turtle found stranded on Sun- set Beach near Fort Stevens State Park has died, staff at the Oregon Coast Aquarium reported. Andrew Pittard, a long- time friend of Seaside Aquarium staff, found the stranded turtle on Saturday. He contacted staff member Tiffany Boothe, who met Pittard at Sunset Beach. Oregon Coast Aquarium staff found the turtle’s body temperature at 54 degrees, then administered fluids and cleaned a wound. Despite treatment efforts, the turtle died Monday morning. Oregon State University will perform a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death and for data col- lection. Often in long-term cold-stun cases, the organs are compromised beyond repair, Oregon Coast Aquar- ium staff said.
