LOGGERS POUND PIRATES, 89-52 The Daily Astorian K NAPPA — The Knappa boys basketball team scored over 80 points for the fourth time this season, on its way to another easy Northwest League victory Tuesday night, 89-52 over Neah-Kah-Nie. Senior Dale Takalo — a legitimate state Player of the Year candidate — topped the Loggers with 34 points, followed by Eli Takalo with 18. Knappa led just 20-16 after one quarter, but outscored the Pirates 55-20 over the next two quarters. “We pressed ‘em and kind of diced them up with our defense, got the turnovers and that led to a lot of layups,” said Knappa coach Chris Spencer, whose team is still ranked third in the state at the 2A level. “Our defense really set things up for the offense.” Knappa plays Thursday at Vernonia, a team Knappa defeated 69-48 earlier in the season. Second-half rally sends Neah-Kah-Nie over Knappa girls KNAPPA — A 10-4 run by Neah-Kah-Nie in the second half helped the Pirates to a 32-19 win at Knappa in a Northwest League girls bas- ketball game Tuesday. Neither team scored in the opening six min- utes of the game, and the Loggers were within 14-12 at halftime. “Then Neah-Kah-Nie came out on a lit- tle hot streak to start the third quarter,” said Knappa coach Marie Green, “and that was it.” Otherwise, she said, “we played a fantas- tic first half. We focused on (Neah-Kah-Nie senior) Maddie Lambert, who blew the doors off us the last time we played. But we played a box-and-one on her this time, and Aiko Miller did a fantastic job of defending her,” holding Lambert to just six points. Knappa’s Madelynn Weaver led all scorers with 10 points, five rebounds and three steals. Miller had eight boards and Vicki Ramvick collected seven rebounds for Knappa, which plays at Vernonia Thursday. Tillamook holds off Fishermen TILLAMOOK — A pair of 3-point shots just before halftime gave Tillamook a 27-23 lead at the break, and sparked the Cheesemak- ers to a 66-54 win over Astoria in a Cowapa League boys basketball game Tuesday. “It was a good all-around game for us,” said Astoria coach Kevin Goin. “We’re making improvements every game, and I thought we played well in a tough environment tonight.” Astoria sophomore Isaac Brockman had a career-high 20 points. Junior Ian Hunt added 19 and Karsten Johnson scored 11 for the Fishermen. Tillamook had four players in double fig- ures, led by Nathan Abbott with 18. Astoria hosts No. 1-ranked Banks on Friday. Astoria girls crush Tillamook Cheesemakers TILLAMOOK — The Cowapa League’s biggest game of the week takes place Friday night at Astoria, where the Lady Fishermen host No. 3-ranked Banks in a potential show- down for the league title. Astoria tuned up for the Braves with an easy 59-17 win at Tillamook, behind a 14-point night for Sam Hemsley. The Lady Fishermen (10-6 overall) had all the points they would need after just one quar- ter, leading 18-2 after the first period over the Cheesemakers, who fall to 3-13. Freshman Kelsey Fausett added 11 points and freshman Sophie Long scored nine for Astoria. Gulls score easy win at Valley Catholic BEAVERTON — The rematch of last year’s state championship game turned out to be no contest Tuesday night. The Seaside boys basketball team is on a hot streak and playing better than any team in the state at the 4A level. The No. 2-ranked Gulls proved it again, with a decisive 51-35 Cowapa League win at No. 5-ranked Valley Catholic. Chase Januik scored 19 points and Ryan Hague added 17 for Seaside, which had the game well in hand by halftime, leading 26-14. And the Gulls increased their advantage in the third period, as Hague and Januik knocked down a combined three 3-pointers for a 40-22 lead heading into the final quarter. The Gulls — who now have wins over the third-, fourth- and fifth-ranked teams in the state — improved to 3-0 in league play, 14-2 overall. Colin Murphey/The Daily Astorian Dale Takalo puts up a shot for Knappa. Valley Catholic rallies past Seaside girls BEAVERTON — Seaside bounced back from a tough loss Friday at Astoria with a solid effort Tuesday at Valley Catholic, but the sixth-ranked Valiants escaped with the victory, 49-37. The Cowapa League girls basketball show- down was much closer than the score indicated. Following their 36-turnover loss against the Fishermen, the Gulls came out and took a 19-17 halftime lead against the Valiants. And Seaside held leads throughout the game, including a 30-24 advantage late in the third period. Emy Kiser, Annaka Garhofer and Bryre Babbitt all drained 3-pointers in the third for the Lady Gulls, for a 33-31 lead going into the final quarter. But the Valiants rallied behind a pair of 3-point shots by Noelle Mannen, and Callie Kawaguchi did the rest from the free throw line, as Valley Catholic finished the contest on an 18-4 run. Mannen led all scorers with 23 points, fol- lowed by Kawaguchi with 15. Kiser scored nine for Seaside before fouling out, along with Jetta Ideue. “We’re doing pretty well for three quarters,” said Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “Actually led going into the fourth, but a bit like Astoria, we have to play four full (quarters), and play the fourth with a bit more poise. But the ship’s been pointed in the right direction for a while now, and hopefully we can steer a few of these close games home.” Portland Adventist holds off Warrenton WARRENTON — Warrenton’s patient, slow-it-down offense had the Warriors tied with Portland Adventist 8-8 after one quarter before the Cougars pulled away for a 52-37 win Tuesday night, in a Lewis & Clark League boys basketball game. A layup by Jacob Morrow gave the Warriors a 10-8 lead in the opening seconds of the sec- ond period, but Portland Adventist answered with two 3-pointers, followed by a steal and score from Julian Garcia, helping the Cougars build an 18-10 lead. Baskets by Devin Jackson and Austin Little had Warrenton within 35-24 to close the third quarter, but more scores off turnovers and back- to-back 3-pointers pushed Portland Adventist’s lead to 45-27 midway through the fourth. Warrenton takes to the road for its next two games, Friday at Catlin Gabel and Tuesday at Oregon Episcopal. Warrenton girls hang on for win WARRENTON — The Warrenton girls basketball team is tuned up for a big stretch run to close out the regular season, following a big, 42-37 victory Tuesday over Portland Adventist. Warrenton’s Claire Bussert made two free throws with 2:29 left, and those two points gave the Warriors an insurmountable 38-36 lead on their way to the win. Tyla Little added two free throws with 26 seconds remaining, and Fernanda Alvarez tacked on a score at the buzzer for the final two points. The Warriors led 14-4 early, but in their final league appearance at Warrenton, the Cou- gars rallied and tied the game at 36-36 with just under three minutes remaining. Following a timeout, Bussert made two free throws and the Warriors held Portland Adventist to just one point the remainder of the game. Bussert led the Warriors with 18 points, which included a big 3-pointer to end the third period. Little finished with 17. Warrenton has five league games remain- ing. The Warriors’ next four opponents have a combined 11-35 record, before they host De La Salle in the league finale. Short-handed Jewell boys fall to OSD JEWELL — With two of their top scorers out of the lineup, the points were hard to come by for the Jewell boys basketball team Tuesday night against Oregon School for the Deaf. The visiting Panthers trailed 25-24 at half- time, but went on an 18-3 run in the third quar- ter, for an eventual 62-42 win over the Blue Jays in a Casco League contest. Jewell’s Jacob Lilley and Ben Stahly were both out with the flu, so Nathan Kane picked up the scoring slack with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Kane added 11 points before foul- ing out, and Nathan Nelson pulled down 13 rebounds. Guillen scores 21 in Jewell girls’ win JEWELL — The Casco League title hopes are still alive for the Jewell girls basketball team, which scored another easy win Tues- day at home, 38-15 over Oregon School for the Deaf. Emma Guillen poured in 21 points and Lilly Kaczenski added eight for the Lady Jays, who held Oregon School for the Deaf to just three total points over the second and third quarters. Gabi Morales had six rebounds for Jewell. Naselle boys top Columbia Adventist BATTLE GROUND, Wash. — Ethan Lind- strom led a trio of Naselle players in double fig- ures with 15 points, helping the Comets to a 64-49 win Tuesday at Columbia Adventist in a 1B boys basketball game. Kolby Glenn scored 13 points and Jacob Eaton finished with 12 for the Comets, who outscored Columbia Adventist 24-13 in the final quarter. Naselle girls fall at Columbia Adventist BATTLE GROUND, Wash. — A rally by the Naselle Comets came up short Tues- day in Battle Ground, Wash., where Columbia Adventist held on for a 41-36 win in a 1B girls basketball game. Kenzie Glenn scored 12 points to lead Naselle, which trailed 15-5 after one quar- ter. The Comets rallied but still trailed 20-17 at halftime. Taylor Gudmundsen scored eight points for Naselle. Ilwaco Fishermen defeat Raymond Gulls RAYMOND, Wash. — Ilwaco overcame an early deficit Tuesday night to defeat Ray- mond 56-50 in a Pacific 2B League boys bas- ketball game. The Fishermen trailed 18-13 after one quarter, but outscored the Gulls 16-7 in the second period. Reese Tynkila scored 17 points, Alex Kaino added 11 and John Glenn chipped in with 10 points for the Fishermen.
