10A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 2018 CONTACT US FOLLOW US facebook.com/ DailyAstorianSports Gary Henley | Sports Reporter ghenley@dailyastorian.com Astoria girls defeat Seaside, snap Clatsop Clash losing skid By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian Colin Murphey/The Daily Astorian Brooklynn Hankwitz rebounds for Astoria during the Clatsop Clash. It was a night of jump balls, fouls, free throws and turnovers. But with their 41-30 win over Sea- side, the Astoria girls basketball team still accom- plished two important goals Friday night. The Lady Fishermen avoided an 0-2 start in league play, and their victory at the Brick House was the first over the Gulls in almost six years. Astoria ended one of the longest Clatsop Clash droughts, scoring their first win over Seaside since Feb. 10, 2012 to break an 11-game losing streak to the Gulls. Astoria coach Mike Jacobson was Seaside’s coach that night. “I remember it,” he said, of Astoria’s 37-18 win over his Gulls. “I think it was (Kaitlin) Lewis’s sophomore year. We came in here and couldn’t hit a basket. I knew it had been a while.” In Friday’s game, Astoria was just 6-of-30 from the field in the first half, yet they were still tied with the Gulls at halftime, 14-14 — due in large part to Seaside’s 15 turnovers in the first half. Seaside held a 13-5 lead midway through the second quarter, behind two 3-pointers from Annaka Garhofer. But Astoria finished the first half with a 9-1 run, capped by Sam Hemsley’s bank shot in the closing seconds. Astoria’s first half shots “were all good shots, they just weren’t going in,” Jacobson said. “We told them, ‘keep shooting. They’ll go in.’ Brook- lynn (Hankwitz) played a good game, and so did Haley O’Brien and Kelsey Fausett.” Still, “It was pretty ugly,” he said, as the game had a combined 37 fouls, 45 free throws and 57 turnovers. “You know how it is with rivalry games. We fought through it, got it tied at halftime, then we started hitting some shots and getting to the free throw line, and made our free throws (14-for-25).” The Gulls gave up the ball 21 more times in the second half for 36 turnovers, while Astoria made the necessary halftime adjustments to pull away in the second half. “We weren’t running the offense the way we needed to, and we made a couple adjustments,” Jacobson said. “And this is the first time all year that they actually made the adjustments. We’re young and learning. But they made the adjustments and went out there and did what we needed to do. It was a good win. The girls are happy.” SPORTS IN BRIEF Knappa boys slay Delphian Dragons KNAPPA — The Takalo broth- ers outscored Delphian all by themselves Saturday afternoon in a Northwest League boys basketball game at Knappa. Eli Takalo scored 27 points and big brother Dale Takalo added 14, helping the Loggers get past the last-place Dragons, 75-32. Knappa led 42-13 at halftime. Eli Takalo made three consecu- tive 3-pointers in the third quarter to increase Knappa’s lead. Jefferson girls win at Knappa KNAPPA — Jefferson scored the first eight points of the game, and cruised from there for a 51-24 win over Knappa in a nonleague girls basketball game Friday. Cassie Cheever scored 13 points for the Class 3A Lions, who forced 26 Knappa turnovers. Paris Vanderburg had eight points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Loggers, and Vicki Ramvick added six points and four steals. Clatskanie boys win battle with Warrenton CLATSKANIE — A rough third quarter ended up costing the Warrenton boys basketball team Friday night at Clatskanie. The Warriors played the host Tigers closely in every quarter except the third, when Clatskanie went on an 18-8 run, on its way to a 56-42 win. Warrenton had two players in double figures, led by Ayden Ste- phens with 12. Dalton Knight added 10 points and Devin Jackson scored six for the Warriors, who trailed 30-24 at halftime. Colin Murphey/The Daily Astorian Ryan Hague drives to the basket for Seaside against Astoria’s Conner Long. Sharpshooting Seaside downs Astoria The Daily Astorian Clatskanie girls outlast Warrenton CLATSKANIE — The Clats- kanie Tigers only had four play- ers in the scoring column Friday night, but those four were enough to defeat the Warrenton Warriors, 53-40, in a key Lewis & Clark League girls basketball game. Clatskanie freshman Shelby Blodgett scored 31 points. Fresh- man Olivia Sprague added 18. Macy Simmons and freshman Alexis Smith tacked on two points apiece for the No. 5-ranked Tigers, who built a 27-16 halftime lead. Tyla Little scored 12 points for the Warriors, who outscored the Tigers 11-10 in the third quarter. Claire Bussert added 11 points and Fernanda Alvarez scored eight for the Warriors, who play three of their next five games on the road. Ilwaco girls blast Raymond, 70-6 ILWACO, Wash. — Ilwaco cruised to another non-competitive win Friday night, 70-6 over visiting Raymond. Three players scored in double figures for the No. 1-ranked Fishermen. — The Daily Astorian T he forecast called for rain Friday night in Astoria. Actual rain outside, and Sea- side 3-pointers inside, raining down on the Fishermen. When the game was over, the Gulls were 12-for-21 from the 3-point line, to highlight a 71-42 win over the Fishermen in a Clat- sop Clash boys basketball game at the Brick House. Seaside’s Beau Johnson scored the first points of the game on a 3-pointer, and the show was on. Johnson drained two more treys in the first quarter. Chase Januik, Rafi Sibony and Payton Westerholm made three straight to open the second period, and the Gulls finished the first half 6-of-12 from the arc. In the meantime, Astoria’s Karsten John- son hit two 3-pointers and Ian Hunt added a third to keep the Fishermen within striking distance (32-21) at halftime. But — as they do against most teams — the Gulls shifted into high gear in the second half. Januik opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, which sparked a 9-0 run. Beau Johnson hit his fourth trey of the night, Astor Landwehr hit a triple off the bench, and Westerholm closed the third period with a long 3-pointer at the buzzer. Seaside does not keep 3-point shooting records, but the Gulls likely came close to or set a school record with 12, as Ryan Hague and Januik both hit 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. “We shot pretty well from outside the line,” said Seaside coach Bill Westerholm. “When we trust each other we can be pretty good on offense.” Januik led all scorers with 15 points, while Hague and Westerholm added 14 apiece. Astoria’s Isaac Brockman scored 12 of his team-high 14 points in the second half.
