7A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2017 CONTACT US FOLLOW US facebook.com/ DailyAstorianSports Gary Henley | Sports Reporter ghenley@dailyastorian.com North Bend holds off Astoria, 48-42 Successful weekend The Daily Astorian The Astoria boys basketball team returned to their home floor Monday night, where the Fisher- men hosted North Bend in non- league action at the Brick House. And the Bulldogs had their star player in top form, as junior Jayden Frank scored 25 points to lead North Bend to a 48-42 win. Astoria led 10-6 after one quar- ter, but the Bulldogs rallied and held a 33-32 lead heading into the fourth. Frank made 5-of-7 free throws in the final quarter, and North Bend was able to close out the victory. Karsten Johnson scored 18 points and Josh Olson added 13 for the Fishermen, who return to action tonight at home vs. Gladstone. Warrenton girls rally for win The Daily Astorian PORTLAND — A 3-pointer by Claire Bussert with 1:20 remain- ing snapped a 30-30 tie, and led to a 34-32 win for Warrenton at Port- land Adventist in a Lewis & Clark League girls basketball game. “It’s a huge win,” said Warren- ton coach Robert Hoepfl, whose team finally won on the Cou- gars’ home floor, in Warrenton’s last league game ever at Port- land Adventist. “It’s definitely big because we didn’t want to start 0-3 in league, and it gives us some- thing to feel good about heading into break.” The Warriors trailed 17-13 at halftime, then got their game going, as Morgan Blodgett, Tyla Little and Bussert all hit 3-point- ers to help Warrenton grab a 26-24 lead after three quarters. The Cougars had a chance to win the game in the final sec- onds, but a shot missed and Sagi Diego’s big rebound for the War- riors secured the win. Little had 15 points and Bus- sert added eight. By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian Astoria swim teams fourth at Newport The Daily Astorian C ATHLAMET, Wash. — Fif- teen schools took part in the annual Downriver Challenge wrestling meet Saturday. Adna won the team title with 200.5 points, followed by Colum- bia White Salmon and Mark Morris, while Warrenton was the top Oregon school with 136 points. Neah-Kah-Nie, Knappa and Clats- kanie also took part in the event, hosted by Wahkiakum High School. The Warriors had two individual champions, as junior Kaden Gilbert pinned all of his opponents to win the title at 195 pounds, and senior team- mate Beau Reynolds did the same for the championship at 285. “Almost every scorer put points on the board for us, and we got a bunch of bonus points for pins,” said Warrenton coach Corey Conant. “We were happy with fourth place as a team, but it shows how far we have come, because some of our leaders were disappointed we didn’t finish higher. “Coach (Trent) Klebe and I were thrilled with how our team scrapped for points and performed in close matches. We are learning how to wrestle.” Gilbert is “wrestling really light at 195, and is almost set to go down to 182,” Conant said. “Even still, he keeps looking better each week.” Reynolds “is only in his second year of competition, but he put in a ton of work in the offseason and it is really paying off for him this year. His leadership helps form the heart of our team.” Elsewhere, senior Morgan Buoy wrestled up a weight class and still took third at 182; and first-year wres- tler Nic Pior wrestled up a weight at 145, and was 4-1 to place fifth. “Nic is really tough and we knew he could earn us a couple points at 145, but we had no idea he would win four huge matches for us,” Conant said. For Knappa, freshman Isaac Goo- zee had the highest finish for the Log- gers, second at 195. “It was a tough tournament for our Photos by Kathy Morgan/For The Daily Astorian Warrenton’s Kaden Gilbert, left, eventually pinned Jeff Johnston from Neah-Kah-Nie in a bout at 195 pounds. Warrenton’s Thomas Atwood pinned Adna’s Ryder Walker. team and some of our wrestlers were wrestling up a weight,” said Knappa coach Dan Owings. “Wrestling in some of these bigger and tougher tournaments should help our wres- tlers prepare for our league teams.” Knappa’s Jade Somoza was fourth at 113, and David Patterson took fourth at 285. Knappa takes part in the Clats- kanie Invitational Dec.30. Lady Warriors third HILLSBORO — In girls’ wres- tling Saturday, Warrenton wrestlers took part in the Liberty Invitational in Hillsboro. The Lady Warriors placed third out of 20 teams, finishing behind wrestling powerhouses Hood River Valley and Century. Warrenton had two champions, one second-place, three thirds and one fifth. “The girls competed against teams from 5A and 6A schools and showed that Warrenton is also a place to be for girls wrestling,” Conant said. The Warriors were the only non- 5A/6A school in the top 10. For Warrenton, senior and sec- ond-year wrestler Alma Bolaños went 3-0 to take first place in the 124-129 weight bracket. In her final match, Bolaños pinned her opponent in the last seconds of the third round. “Her toughness and unwavering commitment to never giving up is the core leadership of our girls team, and she has shown this both on and off the mat,” said Warrenton girls’ coach Mallory Rettig. Elsewhere, junior Ruby Dyer went 1-0 to take first in the 263-274 weight bracket; and sophomore Noel O’Bryan was 2-1 for second in the 158-177 bracket. Also scoring points: sophomore Isabella Carr (3-1) took third at 133- 143; sophomore Libby Rehnert (3-1) was third at 166-181; sophomore Jade Freniere (1-1) placed third at 200- 219; and sophomore Anna Schenbeck (2-2) was fifth at 130-136. “Our girls went to a large tour- nament and made a statement,” Ret- tig said. “We are showing the area that Warrenton girls wrestling, even though we are only a second-year pro- gram, is a place to be for girls wres- tling. Although we are a small school, we typically have one of the largest girls’ teams wherever we travel to.” NEWPORT — The Astoria swim teams both took fourth place Friday in the Newport Invitational. North Bend won the girls’ team championship with 370 points, followed by Tillamook (236), Newport (199) and Astoria (135), out of 11 schools; and Newport 369 points) took first in the boys’ standings out of nine teams, ahead of North Bend (267), Taft (150) and Astoria (148). Astoria’s girls 200-yard free- style relay team (Jazzy King, Isa- belle Williams, Moira Welsh, Megan Schacher) placed third out of 20 entrants in 2 minutes, 1.51 seconds, behind North Bend and Newport. Astoria was fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
