Long past Astoria boys Corbett defeats Seaside girls The Daily Astorian CORBETT — Seaside played a strong second half, but a 25-13 deficit at halftime was too much to overcome in a nonleague girls basketball game at Corbett Friday, won by the Cardinals, 46-38. “Give Corbett their due, but we were not ready, looked fatigued and didn’t really get after it until too late,” said Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “We’d played two good (home) games, and we wanted to see if we could travel.” Seaside remains on the road for a contest at Yamhill-Carlton Tues- day, then will open the Seaside Holiday Classic at 6 p.m. Thurs- day vs. Crook County. Jeff Ter Har/For The Daily Astorian Seaside’s Chase Januik goes to the hoop, one-on-five, against Corbett in Friday’s game. Seaside Gulls fly past the Corbett Cardinals The Daily Astorian UP NEXT: SEAGULLS SEASIDE — The Seaside Gulls put on a show for their alumni Friday night in their home opener, an 80-52 win over Cor- bett in nonleague boys basketball action. On “Alumni Night” at the Gulls’ Nest, Seaside led just 17-16 late in the first quarter, but an 18-2 run helped the Gulls build a 35-18 lead midway through the second period, and the game was over by halftime, 44-24. Chase Januik scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, while Ryan Hague had • Yamhill-Carlton Tigers (1-3) at Seaside Seagulls (3-0) • Tuesday, 7 p.m. another big night on offense, scoring 13 of his 19 points in the first half. Payton Westerholm fin- ished with 13. A barrage of 3-pointers by the Gulls helped Seaside pull away, as Januik opened the sec- ond quarter with a trey, followed by a pair of three’s from Beau Johnson and a fourth by Westerholm. Januik converted two three- point plays, then drained a 3-pointer to help the Gulls to their 20-point halftime lead. It was Seaside’s 17th straight win at home, where the Gulls have not lost since Jan. 26, 2016. Seaside improves to 3-0, with the last two wins coming by a combined 57 points. The Gulls host Yamhill-Carl- ton (1-3) Tuesday, then will play for their third straight Seaside Holiday Classic championship later in the week. Seaside plays Madras in a first round game, 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Astoria swimmers score big in ‘Andrew’s Meet’ By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian The first big home meet of the sea- son is always a fun one for the Asto- ria swim team — and it’s even more enjoyable for the Fish when they win. Which they did Saturday, in a wash, so to speak. It wasn’t even close, as the Fish- ermen swim teams both recorded team victories in the annual Andrew Nygaard Invitational — or, “Andrew’s Meet,” honoring the former Asto- ria youth swimmer who died after a summer workout session in Seaside in 1998. Four schools took part in Satur- day’s meet at the Astoria Aquatic Center, as the Fishermen hosted Sea- side, Rainier and Valley Catholic. The Astoria girls racked up 122 points to finish ahead of second-place Seaside (68), while the Fishermen boys collected 136 points, more than double that of the second-place Gulls (57). It was certainly enjoyable for Kath- ryn Zacher, the first-year coach of the Astoria High School swim team. “We did really well,” Zacher said. “We had a lot of individual success. With our team this year, we have a lot of depth. We may not win a lot of events, but with the depth and the relays that we have, we’ll get a lot of second and third-place finishes. All those score points, and that will help a ton at districts.” Some of the highlights for Astoria included a win in the first event, the girls’ 200-yard medley relay, as fresh- men Tori Smith and Grace Peeler combined with seniors Jazzy King and Megan Schacher to finish in 2 minutes, 12.20 seconds, well ahead of Rainier (2:24.84). King came back and won the 50-yard freestyle (first out 27 entries in 28.0), and the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.05). Smith added a victory in the 500- yard freestyle (6:12.65); the Astoria girls had two teams in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and finished first and second; Peeler had a personal best time of 1:19.78 to win the 100-yard breaststroke; and the Lady Fisher- men finished by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay. Long jumped out to a 14-0 lead to start the game, and coasted to a 60-32 win over Astoria Friday in cross-state boys basketball action. Eleven different players made the scoring column for the Lum- berjacks, who were led by Jacob Childers’ 23 points, 12 in the first quarter. Karsten Johnson scored eight points for Astoria, which defeated R.A. Long 69-67 in last year’s meeting. Childers was 5-of-8 from the 3-point line, while teammate Con- ner Wallace added eight points and five steals for R.A. Long. The Fishermen play Thurs- day in a first round game of the Seaside Holiday Classic, against Montesano, Washington, at 11:30 a.m. Central hands Astoria girls their first loss INDEPENDENCE — In a bat- tle of unbeatens, the Class 5A Cen- tral Panthers scored a 53-38 win over Astoria Friday night in a non- league girls basketball game. Three players scored in double figures for Central, which improves to 4-0. Meagan Mendazona led the Panthers with 12 points, followed by Lexy Barba and Elizabeth Chavez with 10 apiece. Brooklynn Hankwitz scored 16 for Astoria, now 3-1. The Lady Fishermen trailed 36-13 at half- time, before outscoring the Pan- thers 25-17 in the second half. Knappa boys defeat Regis, again STAYTON — Knappa’s dom- inance over Regis continued into another sport Saturday. With wins over the Rams in baseball last spring and football in the fall, Knappa cruised past Regis in boys basketball Saturday night, 55-49. The No. 11-ranked Log- gers improve to 3-2, with the 14th-ranked Rams also 3-2. Knappa had to hold off a furi- ous rally by Regis, as the Loggers built a 28-14 lead midway through the second quarter, before the Rams rallied to within 38-30 after three, then trailed just 51-47 with 1:28 left. But Knappa made 5-of-6 free throws in the final quarter to secure the win. Dale Takalo led all scorers with 28 points, followed by teammate Timber Engblom with 16. The Loggers were 12-of-18 at the free throw line, to the Rams’ 20-for-30. Regis girls beat Knappa with late score Kara Spell of Seaside swims in the girls 200-yard individual med- ley race at the Nygaard Invitation- al in Astoria Saturday. Isaiah Collins competes in the boys 200-yard freestyle event for Seaside Saturday at the Nygaard Invitational in Astoria. The Astoria boys had two indi- vidual winners, including freshman Davis Wingard, who won a battle to the wall with Valley Catholic senior Harrison Kyser to win the 500 in 5:47.02. Riley Cameron edged teammate Aleks Matthews to place first in the breaststroke. The Fishermen added two more wins in the 200 freestyle and 400 free- style relays. “Davis did fantastic in both of his events, and PR’d by four seconds in the 500,” Zacher said. The Seaside boys scored points with wins in the 200 medley relay; Josh Shipley in the 200-yard individ- ual medley (2:15.34) and the 100 free- style (51.62, nearly 10 seconds ahead of Astoria’s Ryder Dopp); and Isaiah Collins won the 100-yard backstroke (1:11.16). On the girls’ side, Seaside’s Kendy Lin captured the 200-yard freestyle in 2:21.84, then later won the backstroke (1:10.45). Early season success has Astoria talking district titles. “The 400 free relay is already faster than our best time last year,” Zacher said. “We’re doing really well for where we’re at. Second meet in, we have all these PR’s, and the kids are feeling the energy. They work hard every day, and they’re really motivated. “Obviously we have our sights set on the Tillamook girls and the New- port boys. Those are the two hur- dles we have going into districts, so we’re trying to figure out our best lineup with our depth, leading up to districts.” STAYTON — In a low-scoring nonleague girls basketball game, Regis scored with 13 seconds remaining for a 27-26 win over Knappa Saturday. The Loggers held a 21-15 lead entering the final quarter, where the Rams went on a 12-5 run to post the win. Kourtney Tischer scored nine points with seven rebounds for Knappa, with Vicki Ramvick add- ing five points and eight boards. Paris Vanderburg finished with nine rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Sophie Carlson had seven rebounds and three steals. Warrenton boys walk past Open Door WARRENTON — The War- renton boys basketball team scored its first win over the season Friday, a 47-34 decision over Open Door Christian Academy at Warrenton.
