Kathryn Zacher takes over for Amy Emmett as the Asto- ria coach. Zacher came to Asto- ria from Roseburg in the fall of 2016, to coach the North Coast Swim Club. She had served as both a high school coach and the YMCA club coach in Roseburg. She inherits a team that had just six seniors last year. This season — 35 swim- mers and 14 seniors, with 10 freshmen. “Our team is looking strong already, with a ton of energy and skill,” Zacher said. “We are excited to see how we do, and have some big team goals to bring home a district title once again.” The Astoria girls placed fourth in the District 1 meet last season. Shannon Christie was the big point-scorer, placing third in the 50-yard freestyle to qualify for state, in addition to a fourth-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle. Unfortunately, Christie has graduated, along with Kendal Gustafson, as the two helped the Lady Fish to a third-place, state-qualifying finish in the 200-yard free- style relay. The Astoria girls have one member of the relay back, with Megan Schacher return- ing for her senior season. Astoria did not have any state qualifiers on the boys’ side, but the Fishermen will have a few candidates on the list this year. Zacher’s evaluation on North Coast Swim Club Kathryn Zacher is the new coach at poolside for the Astoria swim team. some of her key swimmers: Thayne Covert is in his fourth year and “has poten- tial to be a top finisher at dis- tricts,” as does Cole Beeson. Junior Ryder Dopp “has spent some extra time training, and is starting off as our top seed male.” Junior Elias Sim- mons will complete a strong freestyle relay with Covert, Beeson and Dopp, which could “very well make state this year.” On the girls’ side, senior Jazzy King is a transfer from Roseburg High school, and could be an individual state qualifier. Schacher is look- ing to be a top district fin- isher individually. Along with King and freshmen Grace Peeler and Tori Smith, “the girls have a goal to break the school record in two relays and get to state.” THE SWIMMERS Girls Jordan Admire-Novak, Fr. Low numbers, high quality for Astoria wrestling team By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian THE WRESTLERS Half the battle of compet- ing in Cowapa League wres- tling is numbers and filling all the weights — a battle usually won by the likes of Banks, Scappoose and Tillamook. It’s tough to compete with the Portland-area schools, and the traditional powers of the Cowapa. The battle is no differ- ent for the Astoria Fisher- men as they enter a new sea- son. While head coach Roy Sanchez is still scouring the halls for more wrestlers, he’s happy with the group of ath- letes he has on the mat. Jeff was one of our only regional placers last sea- son. Juan was a locked-hands penalty from qualifying for state two seasons ago.” In addition, “We also have a couple first-year wrestlers on the team,” Sanchez said. “Axel Pineda and Landon Law are excellent athletes. Freshmen Marcos (Elena), and Jed (Smith) are looking to compete for varsity spots. Cassidy (Kendrick) has a lot of experience wrestling in youth clubs.” Other returners include sophomores Riley Ashton and Dalton Somers, “who are both looking to place at regionals this season,” San- chez said. “We’re low on numbers, but we’re looking forward to focusing more on qual- ity. Our team is very ath- letic, and we have plenty of upperclassmen.” ASTORIA YOUTH ATHLETICS Come Visit Us For Your Sports Physicals only $ 40 Keith Klatt, MD Sally Baker, PA-C Mark Tabor, PA-C 2120 Exchange Street, Suite 111 Astoria, Oregon 503-325-0333 Open 7 Days A Week!
