8A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2017 Bear spotted in Hammond for second straight year Police had posted video of a bear a year ago By JACK HEFFERNAN The Daily Astorian WARRENTON — R es- idents who beared witness to an unusually large, black animal Tuesday were not hallucinating. Police have received at least three calls since a bear was reported to be digging through trash in a dumpster at the Hammond Marina Tues- day morning. R esidents also claimed their garbage had been disturbed. At this point, police believe just one bear is roaming. Since Tuesday was garbage day in Hammond, the animal may have been more active than usual, Police Chief Mathew Workman said. A rarity on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, bears were also spotted in Warren- ton and Hammond last Octo- ber. Warrenton p olice posted a video exactly one year ago Tuesday of an offi cer chasing a small black bear off Skipanon Colin Murphey/The Daily Astorian Shovels wait to be used for a groundbreaking ceremony in Warrenton at the site of a new armed forces monument. Memorial: More than $40,000 secured, exceeding original goal Continued from Page 1A donations and gained polit- ical support from local offi - cials such as state Sen. Betsy Johnson, D-Scappoose. In total, they secured more than $40,000, exceed- ing the original goal of $26,530. “We didn’t have any opposition, basically,” Bert Little said. Some of the money also came from purchases of 4-inch by 8-inch concrete memorial bricks that will be placed in the area below the statue. The bricks, still avail- able for purchase for up to $60, are intended to individ- ually honor local veterans by name. The statue is the latest, but likely not the fi nal, addi- tion to an increasingly robust display near a busy down- town intersection. The grassy area next to the Post Offi ce features several fl ag- poles and some other small tributes. A second bench may be added to the area sometime in the future, said Bert Little, who also sits on the Warren- ton Parks Advisory Board. “We’d like people to be able to come here during the day and eat their lunch,” he said. “This is basically going to be a monument park.” Roy Western Black bears, like this one on the Long Beach Peninsula in Washington state, are a rarity on the Oregon side of the Columbia River. Drive in a car. Workman had only heard of one bear sight- ing in his eight years as chief before that report. “I don’t know if it’s the same bear looking to hiber- nate in the area or what, but it’s ironic,” Workman said. Workman advised residents not to approach bears, remove as many food scents as possi- ble from outside homes and secure garbage cans. While it is natural for bears to roam at night, residents should call police if they are creating a dangerous situation or if the animals are spotted during the day. “If you keep your distance, you should be fi ne,” Workman said.
