The library will offer delectable baked goods and an array of colorful handmade crafts, all available for sale. Items are created by the library’s volunteers, and proceeds help fund the library. Enjoy an old-fashioned cake walk, put in a ticket for the local merchant gift certifi cate drawing, and place a bid on our hotel stay silent auction. The library is located at 131 N. Hemlock St., between Mariner Market and the US Bank. SUBMITTED PHOTO ASTORIA — Join author, editor and writing instruc- tor Matt Love in an Astoria private home 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, for a writing workshop titled “Polishing and Profession- alizing Your Writing.” Love will guide partic- ipants through a series of exercises and discussions that improve the writer’s intent, organization, voice and engagement with readers. “The workshop will help writers of fi ction, cre- ative nonfi ction, freelance magazine and newspaper contributors, screenwriters, grant and report writers, even poets, polish their prose to deliver better work to their respective audiences,” Love wrote. Workshop exercises include experimenting with different ways of opening pieces and paragraphs; Local fi shes, global dishes: a cooking class SEASIDE — Take a mini vacation on foreign shores at Seaside Public Library’s “Local Fishes, Global Dishes” cooking class 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30. Taught by Jennifer Burns Bright, the event is sponsored by the Friends of the Seaside Library and will be held in the Community Room. The class is limited to 20 people. People can sign up for this special event at the Circula- tion Desk or by phone. The class will feature cooking instruction and hands-on demonstrations using local catch to prepare classic and exotic dishes from the Mediterranean and Asia. It will include recipes and tips for preparing favor- ites on the Oregon Coast. Attendees will have a full experience of prepping, cooking and serving these tantalizing items, as well as sharing an international repast. Burns Bright is a food and travel writer based in Port Orford. She recently retired from teaching at the University of Oregon, where she led a faculty research group in the emerging disci- pline of food studies. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of California at Irvine and a Master Food Pre- server certifi cation. Her writ- ing appears in Gastronomica, Oregon Quarterly, NPR’s The Salt, Eugene Magazine and other publications.
