Community members are encouraged to post a video on WCU’s Facebook page explaining why their favorite teacher deserves to win. The entry with the most votes as measured by Facebook “reac- tions” wins the grand prize. The contest ends Sept. 30, and winners will be announced Oct. 9. Any offi cially licensed teacher in WCU’s service area of Clatsop, Columbia and Western Washington counties or Pacifi c County, Washing- ton, is eligible. For information, go to http://bit.ly/2wAkVkU The Columbia Memorial Hospital Foundation thanked its donors recently through a tribute to giving. Donors were thanked for their philan- thropic support of programs and services at CMH, notably, the CMH-Oregon Health and Science University Knight Cancer Collaborative, which will open in early October. The guests were enter- tained by Richard Steele, magician and mentalist. The evening was capped off by the presentation of four awards— including two new awards. The new Columbia Award was presented to Michael Autio, the immediate past board chairman of the foun- dation. He has been actively involved with the foundation and the hospital for over 22 years. CMH Board Chairwoman Constance Waisanen pre- sented Dr. William Arming- ton with the fi rst Cadeusus Award, which recognizes a physician or provider who has gone above and beyond to advance philanthropy at CMH, and in the community. Last year’s recipient, Michael Autio, presented the award to Willis Van Dusen, longtime mayor of Astoria and a community leader who has raised millions of dollars for programs throughout Clat- sop County, including lead- ing the fundraising effort for the new cancer center, which raised $3 million. The President’s Award, named for CMH’s current president and CEO, Erik Thorsen, recognizes a hos- pital employee. The 2017 recipient was Randy McClel- land, director of CMH’s stra- tegic initiatives department. Thanks to the assistance of the NRA Foundation, our club continues to be highly successful as demonstrated by one of our members who competed at the National 4H Championship.
