Pirate junior quarterback Josh Longfellow had two touchdown passes to soph- omore Des- tin Donald- son to lead the Neah-Kah-Nie offense. The Pirates shut out the Warriors in the second half, highlighted by a pair of interceptions from junior Jack Porter, who returned one for a touchdown with two minutes left in the game. Warrenton plays at Nestucca Friday, as the Warriors still have three more nonleague games before beginning their three-game league season Oct. 13. Fishermen shut down Warriors 28-7 By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian Following a low-scoring 3-0 win over Gladstone the previous week, the Astoria Fishermen were back to their usual antics Fri- day night at CMH Field — forcing turnovers and big stops on defense, and long scoring drives on offense. In short, the Fishermen showed what “rou- tine” looks like, in a 28-7 nonleague win over Philomath. Astoria had two runners over the 100-yard mark, and the Fishermen defense — when it had to be — was solid for most of the night, forcing three turnovers and limiting the War- riors to just 43 yards of total offense in the second half. Most of all, the Fishermen finished strong, scoring a pair of touchdowns and rolling up eight first downs in the fourth quarter. Senior Tyler Ranta had one of his biggest nights, rushing for 136 yards and two touch- downs on 24 carries; and quarterback Tris- tin Wallace ran 17 times for 108 yards and a score, in addition to throwing for 98 yards and a touchdown. Astoria improves to 2-1 overall, and also climbed to seventh in the latest OSAA rankings. Philomath drops to 1-2. The Warriors only Justin Villa intercepts a pass in the end zone. had two good offensive drives — the first ended with an interception in the end zone, and the second resulted in Philomath’s lone score, a 1-yard run by Dakota Kantor in the second quarter. Still, Kantor’s touchdown had the game tied 7-7 at halftime (shades of Astoria’s game with Gladstone, which was 0-0 at the break). But whatever adjustments the Fishermen made at halftime, they worked. Astoria took the opening kickoff in the second half, and drove 71 yards in 12 plays, capped by Ranta’s 5-yard touchdown run. The first two Philomath possessions of the second half ended in failed fourth-down con- versions, and the Fishermen took advantage on their third series of the half. Sparked by a 15-yard completion from Wallace to Zac Patterson, Wallace scored on a quarterback keeper from a yard out, pushing the lead to 21-7. On the next play from scrimmage, Asto- ria’s Karsten Johnson intercepted a Kenan Conner pass, and Wallace capped a 58-yard drive with a 15-yard TD toss to Justin Villa with 2:21 left in the game. And just to get their second string offense some work, the Fishermen recovered the ensuing onside kick to run out the clock. Wallace was 9-of-18 passing, with four completions to Villa for 50 yards. Villa also intercepted a Warrior pass in the end zone, and made a touchdown-saving tackle on Phi- lomath’s Matt Hamilton in the second quarter. The Fishermen take to the road for the next two weeks to begin Cowapa League play, at Valley Catholic next Friday, and at Seaside Sept. 29. Gulls demolish Tigers Knappa Loggers hold off Regis, 40-13 The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — Two programs headed for completely different sea- sons met on the field Friday night in Seaside. And the results were predictable: Seaside 60, Yamhill-Carlton 6. The game went into the 45-point mercy rule in the second quarter, with the Gulls tacking on two scores in the second half. Seaside improves to 2-1, having scored 107 points in its two victories. Yamhill-Carlton falls to 0-3, and has been outscored 130-30 in the three games. Nearly everything worked for the Gulls in Friday’s game. They racked up 397 yards in total offense, averaging 11.3 yards per play. Alex Teubner was the big ground-gainer, rushing for 160 yards on just seven carries (more than 22 yards per run). The Daily Astorian Jeff Ter Har/For The Daily Astorian Seaside’s Alex Teubner (2) aver- aged more than 22 yards per run. Quarterback Payton Westerholm completed just 2-of-4 passes, both for touchdowns, including a 55-yarder to Duncan Thompson, and 16 yards to Teubner. Gio Ramirez added 78 yards rush- ing on seven attempts, and scored on a 38-yard run. STAYTON — Regis held an early 7-6 lead over Knappa, and had hopes of scoring an upset Fri- day night, in a 2A nonleague foot- ball game at Stayton. But those hopes were dashed in the second half, with the No. 8-ranked Loggers outscoring Regis 28-6 for a 40-13 victory. Knappa improves to 3-0 overall, while the Rams drop to 0-3. Knappa has the fourth-highest scoring offense at the 2A level, and the 13 points allowed are tied with Santiam for the fewest allowed. The Loggers suffered a few injuries Friday, but even their bye week is coming at the right time, as Knappa will not play again until Sept. 29, at Nestucca. “A few guys went down and some young guys stepped up,” said Logger coach Aaron Bar- endse. “We continue to stay focused and finish strong. “We were a bit sloppy in the first half, but really pulled together and played great team football, mid-third on,” he added. “Our boys just continue to respond to adversity positively. I couldn’t be prouder of how they’re playing and lifting each other up.” This week’s bye (the Log- gers were originally scheduled to play Colton, before the Vikings canceled), “hopefully will get us healed up and ready for league play,” Barendse said. Hat trick for Byrd, Astoria Fishermen defeat Estacada Rangers in 6-3 victory Kalama Chinooks top Ilwaco Fishermen, 44-6 Aldo Cruz, helping Astoria improve to 3-1 overall. “Estacada only had two subs, so they were stretched pretty thin,” said Astoria coach Lee Cain, whose team is ranked No. 2 in the state, in the lat- est OSAA rankings. “But they were a lot tougher than I expected, and they really battled.” Astoria keeper Jake Hurd made seven saves in goal, while “Jose Gon- zalez really did an incredible job on the back line for us,” Cain said. “Aldo Cruz also played great, and we have a sophomore, Michael Postlewait, who has stepped in and is playing well.” KALAMA, Wash. — Kalama held a 21-0 lead after one quar- ter, on its way to a 44-6 win over Ilwaco Friday in nonleague foot- ball action. Quarterback Alex Dyer tossed a pair of touchdown passes (to Tucker Wetmore and Grant Van- denberg) in the opening quarter, and Wetmore ran 67 yards for a third period touchdown, as Kala- ma’s lead reached 44-0. Ilwaco’s lone score came with 14 seconds left, a 2-yard pass from Parker Keach to Tenyson Ramsey. The Daily Astorian ESTACADA — The Astoria boys soccer team tuned up for league play with a 6-3 nonleague win at Estacada Saturday. Astoria’s Trevor Byrd scored his third hat trick of the season, with three goals in the victory. One of Byrd’s goals came via a penalty kick, while teammate Cole Beeson also scored on a penalty kick for the Fishermen, who led 5-1 at halftime. Other Astoria goals came from freshman Josh Condit and junior Beeson picked up two assists to go with his one goal, with another assist coming from junior Bladimir Zaragoza. The Fishermen open Cowapa League play Wednesday at Valley Catholic, followed by the Clatsop Clash Saturday at Seaside’s Broad- way Field. In girls’ soccer action Saturday, Estacada and Astoria battled to a 0-0 draw. The Lady Fishermen host Val- ley Catholic in a Cowapa League opener Wednesday, 7:15 p.m. at CMH Field. The Daily Astorian
