2017 REGATTA DIGNITARIES 2017 ASTORIA REGATTA PRESIDENT CAPT. DANIEL J. TRAVERS apt. Daniel J. Travers retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in June 2016 after serving 26 years of active duty. His last assignment was as the commander of Coast Guard Sector Columbia River and the Captain of the Port, where he was responsible for all Coast Guard operations throughout the sector, which included protecting life and property, enforcing federal laws and treaties, preserving the living marine resources and promoting national security. A career aviator, he flew more than 3,800 flight hours in the MH-60J/T and MH- 65C helicopters while serving at Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts; Air Station Sitka, Alaska; the Aviation Logistic Center in Elizabeth City, North Carolina; Air Station Detroit and Air Station Astoria. He was the Commanding Officer at Air Stations Detroit and Astoria. Other units included the 17th Coast Guard District in Juneau, Alaska, Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mariposa and cutter Fir in Seattle. A native of Marlboro, Massachusetts, Travers graduated with high honors from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. In 2010, he earned a Master of Science in industrial administration with C a concentration in finance from Purdue University’s Krannert Graduate School of Management and also received a Krannert Scholar Award. In 2011, he earned a Master of Science in national security strategy from the National War College. Additionally, he earned a Program Manager Level II Certification in acquisitions. A lifelong volunteer, Travers has volunteered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Boy Scouts of America, Knights of Columbus, Albemarle Hopeline and Worldwide Marriage Encounter. Since arriving in Astoria in June 2014, he has served on the United Way of Clatsop County Board of Directors, Astoria Regatta Board of Directors, the Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce Advisory Board of Directors and Astoria-Warrenton Airport Advisory Committee, while continuing to be active in Worldwide Marriage Encounter and Knights of Columbus. Travers is currently the customer service manager and a rotor wing pilot for Life Flight Network, where he is responsible for a service area spanning northwest Oregon and southwest Washington coastlines from Tillamook, Oregon to Aberdeen, Washington, and east over the coastal mountains.
