Dropping signa- ture catch phrases. Attaching insults to rivals’ names. Shouting down perceived enemies. If President Donald Trump’s recent attacks on television personalities, journalists and political rivals feel like some- thing straight out of the pro wrestling circuit, it may not be a coincidence. Wrestling aficionados say the president, who has a long his- tory with the game, has borrowed the time-tested tactics of the squared circle to cultivate the ultimate antihero character, a fig- ure who wins at all costs, incites outrage and follows nobody’s rules but his own. “In our terminology, he’s playing it to the hilt,” said former World Wrestling Entertainment writer Dan Madigan. On Sunday, Trump’s apparent fondness for wrestling emerged in a tweeted mock video that shows him pummeling a man in a business suit — his face obscured by the CNN logo — outside a wrestling ring. It was not clear who produced the brief video, which appeared to be a doctored version of Trump’s 2007 appear- ance on World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. But it was tweeted from the president’s official Twitter account. Amtrak train cars derail in Washington state; minor injuries STEILACOOM, Wash. — Several people suffered minor injuries after parts of an Amtrak passenger train derailed in Wash- ington state, authorities said. The locomotive and the baggage car of the Amtrak Cascades train derailed Sunday about 45 miles south of Seattle near the town of Steilacoom, Amtrak and the Pierce County sheriff’s office said. The train, which was carrying 267 passengers, derailed near the Chambers Bay golf course, which was the site of the 2015 U.S. Open. Mitchell Crowley, of Redmond, told the Seattle Times that he was on one of the four cars that went off the track. “I was in the farthest back, didn’t go very far off the rails,” the 18-year-old said. “I did get to have that exciting experience: Brake, brake, brake and tipping over.” Crowley said the car he was on tipped about 15 degrees. All passengers were evacuated and provided with alternate transportation, the company said. The train runs between Van- couver, Canada, and Eugene-Springfield, Oregon. The cause of the derailment is under investigation, Amtrak said. The railroad tracks on which the locomotive derailed was reopened shortly before 6 p.m. for service at limited speeds, Amtrak said. The Gig Harbor Police Department said one of its patrol boats was helping environment officials put in pollution-control booms to block fuel from the derailment from leaking into a nearby body of water. The department posted a photo Sunday afternoon on its Twitter account showing the work. Frates’ family said Sunday that he had returned to the hospital and was “battling this beast ALS like a Superhero.” He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2012. The disease weakens muscles and impairs physical functioning. There is no known cure. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $220 million when it took off worldwide on social media in 2014. Frates is a native of Beverly, Massachusetts, and played base- ball at Boston College. He played professionally in Germany after graduation and in amateur leagues upon his return to the U.S. He received his diagnosis after getting hit on the wrist by a pitch and noticing it wasn’t healing properly. Iraq on cusp of Mosul victory but IS strikes back; 15 killed MOSUL, Iraq — The Islamic State group is striking back with suicide bombings as Iraqi forces appear on the cusp of full vic- tory in Mosul, with at least 15 people killed in the latest assaults across Iraq, officials said today. The attacks underscore the intense violence still plaguing the battered country and the perils that remain as the battle for Iraq’s second-largest city nears its end. In Mosul’s Old City neighborhood — the scene of IS’ last stand, where Iraqi forces are fast closing in on the last remaining pocket of militant-held territory — two women suicide bombers, hiding among a group of fleeing civilians, targeted Iraqi troops this morning, killing one soldier and wounding several others. And at a camp for displaced people in Iraq’s western Anbar province, a suicide bomber dressed in a woman’s all-covering robe killed 14 on Sunday evening, a provincial official said. After days of fierce battles, the territory held by the militants in Mosul is rapidly shrinking, with IS now controlling just over 1 square kilometer in all, or about 0.40 square miles. Arab nations extend deadline Paraglider dies after crashing in in Qatar crisis by 48 hours Oregon’s Cape Lookout State Park DOHA, Qatar — A group of Arab nations early today extended PORTLAND — A paraglider has died after crashing at Cape Lookout State Park in Oregon. The Oregonian reports that 53-year-old Clifton W. Westin of Corvallis died on Saturday. The Oregon State Police say he apparently launched in a para- glider from a cliff overlooking the beach but failed to take flight. He landed on some rocks and waves quickly took him out to sea. Using a helicopter and a motor boat, the U.S. Coast Guard recovered Westin and attempted lifesaving measures, but he could not be revived. Man who inspired ice bucket challenge is back in hospital BOSTON — The man who inspired people around the world to dump buckets of ice water over their heads to raise millions of dollars for Lou Gehrig’s disease research is back in the hospital and is keeping his sense of humor. A Facebook post from the family of 32-year-old Pete Frates said he is resting comfortably at Massachusetts General Hospi- tal and that “doctors, medicine, prayers and love continue to help him get stronger.” After some news outlets erroneously reported today that he had died, Frates responded by posting a 45-second video on Twit- ter showing him lying in a hospital bed while the song “Alive” by a deadline for Qatar to respond to their list of demands in a dip- lomatic crisis roiling the Gulf by 48 hours, saying Kuwait’s emir requested the delay as part of his efforts to mediate the dispute. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain cut off ties with 2022 FIFA World Cup host Qatar on June 5, restricting access to their airspace and ports and sealing Qatar’s only land border, which it shares with Saudi Arabia. They issued a 13-point list of demands to end the standoff June 22 and gave the natural gas-rich country 10 days to comply. The joint statement early today by the four Arab nations said they expected Qatar to respond to their demands later in the day. The new deadline would expire late Tuesday or early Wednes- day. Foreign ministers of the four Arab nations will meet Wednes- day in Cairo to discuss their next moves, Egypt said today. “The response of the four states will then be sent following the study of the Qatari government’s response and assessment of its response to the whole demands,” the statement said. China’s Xi warns Trump of ‘negative factors’ hurting US ties BEIJING — Chinese President Xi Jinping warned Presi- dent Donald Trump today that “some negative factors” are hurt- ing U.S.-China relations, as tensions flare anew over a slew of long-standing sore points. Xi’s comments in a phone call with Trump follow Beijing’s displeasure over U.S. arms sales to rival Taiwan, U.S. sanctions against a Chinese bank over its dealings with North Korea and, most recently, the sailing of a U.S. destroyer within the territorial seas limit of a Chinese-claimed island in the South China Sea. Beijing was also miffed after the State Department gave Bei- jing a dismal grade last week in a new human trafficking report. As reported by state media, Xi told Trump in their call that Beijing expects Washington to continue managing relations on the basis of the “one China” principle that rules out formal con- tacts with Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory. “Xi Jinping emphasized that, since my meeting with the pres- ident at Mar-a-Lago, China-U.S. relations have achieved import- ant outcomes,” state broadcaster CCTV reported, referring to Xi’s meeting with Trump in Florida in April. “At the same time, bilateral relations have been affected by some negative factors. China has expressed its position to the U.S.” White House: Trump backs repeal-only health bill as ‘option’ WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is pressuring wavering senators to back a Republican bill to repeal and replace former President Barack Obama’s health care law but is holding open a repeal-only option if Republicans can’t reach agreement over the July 4 recess, Trump’s top legislative aide says. Marc Short, the White House’s legislative director, said Trump was making weekend calls and believed senators were “getting close” on passing a bill. But Short maintained that Trump continues to believe that repeal-only legislation should also be considered. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has dismissed the suggestion. McConnell says he intends to proceed with GOP legislation being negotiated during the week-long recess. He has previously said if Republicans don’t reach agreement, he will have to turn to Democrats, who want to fix Obama’s health care law without repealing it. “Our preference is to pass the bill the Senate has right now,” Short said. But he added: “If the replacement part is too difficult for Republicans to get together, then let’s go back and take care of the first step of repeal.” “That’s an option,” Short emphasized. Focus at pope’s hospital for kids put profits over patients ROME — Doctors and nurses at the Vatican’s showcase pedi- atric hospital were angry: Corners were being cut. Safety proto- cols were being ignored. And sick children were suffering. The Vatican’s response was swift. A secret three-month investigation in early 2014 gathered testimony and documen- tation from dozens of current and former staff members and confirmed that the mission of “the pope’s hospital” had been lost and was “today more aimed at profit than on caring for children.” What happened next surprised many involved: The report was never made public. While some of the recommendations were carried out, others were not. And the Vatican commissioned a second inquiry in 2015 that — after a three-day hospital visit — concluded nothing was amiss after all. An Associated Press investigation has found that Bambino Gesu (Baby Jesus) Pediatric Hospital, a cornerstone of Italy’s health care system, did indeed shift its focus in ways big and small under its past administration.
