The voter-approved initiative was supposed to provide about $800 per stu- dent to support career-tech- nical programs, early college credit opportunities and drop- out prevention. But the Legis- lature has the power to dictate funding, and the measure has faced uncertainty amid the state’s budget woes. Hoppes said the district is confi dent in the $400-per-student fund- ing fl oor. Astoria’s budget assumes a student enrollment of 1,825 and staffi ng level of 185 full- time equivalents, both the same as this year. The district is planning to hire a social worker, a need identifi ed in a staff review of the district’s mental health services. The funding for the new position would come from Measure 98 proceeds. “As we move forward now and with future fi scal devel- opment, we will strive to maintain quality programs to help ensure students graduat- ing from the Astoria School District are prepared for the workforce and higher educa- tion opportunities,” Hoppes said in his budget message. “I am continually apprecia- tive of the support, partici- pation and viable solutions provided by the community, district staff and school board members.” Forecasts and graphics provided by AccuWeather, Inc. ©2017 Tonight's Sky: Saturn will be at opposition (opposite the sun). Budget for Astoria schools contains slight increase The Astoria School Board on Wednesday adopted an $18.6 million operating bud- get for the 2017-18 school year, a nearly $600,000 increase from the current year. Much of the budget is dependent on how much funding the state Legisla- ture would provide for K-12 education. Astoria budgeted based on $8 billion in K-12 funding from state legislators, which have advanced $8.2 billion in proposed funding. Superintendent Craig Hop- pes said the district has also estimated a minimum of $400 per student from Mea- REGIONAL WEATHER Bobby Bobcat Rice & Dave Coleman, Americana, 6 p.m., Seasons Café, 255 Hemlock St., Cannon Beach.
