The concept is simple: throwing pieces of wood at each other and save the king for last. There are a few more rules, of course. People play around the world, and there is a world cham- pionship tournament in Sweden. The first world champion- ship tournament was in Gotland in 1995, after the game became more commercially available in the 1980s. Ten years ago, Eric Ander- son started a tournament in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, with 15 teams. That tournament has been grow- ing ever since and had 460 play- ers last year. Kubb is played by teams of two to six players, two teams per match. However, many play- ers there are on a team, each team will throw six batons at the Facebook.com opposing team’s “kubbs,” small rectangular pieces lined up at the ends of the playing field. Each team throws all of their batons while their opponents watch, and then the opponents pick up any kubbs knocked over. These are thrown back across to the side they will throw at and they knock those over first. (It makes sense in person.) Once a team is out of kubbs to knock over, they may aim at the king, a larger piece placed in the middle of the field. When the king is down, a winner is declared! Knocking the king down too early is an automatic loss. Come watch the tournament, or try the game yourself at this year’s festival!
