8A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, JUNE 6, 2017 WORLD IN BRIEF Associated Press Report suggests Russia hackers breached voting software firm WASHINGTON — Russian hackers attacked at least one U.S. voting software supplier days before last year’s presidential elec- tion, according to a government intelligence report leaked Monday that suggests election-related hacking penetrated further into U.S. voting systems than previously known. The classified National Security Agency report, which was published online by The Intercept, does not say whether the hack- ing had any effect on election results. But it says Russian mili- tary intelligence attacked a U.S. voting software company and sent spear-phishing emails to more than 100 local election officials at the end of October or beginning of November. U.S. intelligence agencies declined to comment. However, the Justice Department announced Monday it had charged a government contractor in Georgia with leaking a classi- fied report containing “Top Secret level” information to an online news organization. The report the contractor allegedly leaked is dated May 5, the same date as the document The Intercept posted online. The document said Russian military intelligence “executed cyber espionage operations against a named U.S. company in August 2016 evidently to obtain information on elections-related software and hardware solutions, according to information that became available in April 2017.” New search underway near home of London Bridge attackers LONDON — A new search was underway today in a neighbor- hood near the home of two of the London Bridge attackers, hours after police said they had freed everyone detained in the wake of the rampage that left seven dead and dozens wounded. The attack, the third in Britain in three months, has raised ques- tions over the government’s ability to protect Britain following cuts to police numbers in recent years. The issue has become a key one in the run-up to Thursday’s general election. Prime Minister Theresa May, who called the snap election in hopes of strengthening her mandate for discussions over Britain’s exit from the European Union, has come under fire for the cuts to police numbers over recent years. A string of opinion polls over the past couple of weeks have pointed to a narrowing in the gap between her Conservative Party and the main opposition Labour Party. London police said all 12 people held since the attack late Sat- urday from the Barking neighborhood in the east of the city, have been freed. A new search was underway today in Ilford, just north of Barking, as authorities tried to determine whether the group had accomplices. One of the attackers, Khuram Shazad Butt, had appeared in a documentary “The Jihadis Next Door” and was known to investi- gators but police said he was not believed to be plotting an attack. The second man, Rachid Redouane, had not aroused any suspi- cions. Police have not released the identity of the third. The three, who were wearing fake suicide vests, were shot dead during the attack. Needing troops, Army offers up to $90K bonuses to re-enlist FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Struggling to expand its ranks, the Army will triple the amount of bonuses it’s paying this year to more than $380 million, including new incentives to woo reluc- tant soldiers to re-enlist, officials told The Associated Press. Some soldiers could get $90,000 up front by committing to another four or more years, as the Army seeks to reverse some of the downsizing that occurred under the Obama administration after years of growth spurred by the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The enlistment campaign was driven by Congress’ decision late last year to beef up the size of the Army, echoing the spirit if not quite the extent of President Donald Trump’s campaign prom- ises to significantly increase military staffing and firepower. Last fall, Trump unveiled a plan that would enlarge the Army to 540,000 soldiers. Army leaders back the general idea, but say more men and women must be accompanied by funding for the equipment, training and support for them. Under the current plan, the active duty Army will grow by 16,000 soldiers, taking it to 476,000 in total by October. The National Guard and the Army Reserve will see a smaller expansion. To meet the mandate, the Army must find 6,000 new soldiers, convince 9,000 current soldiers to stay on and add 1,000 officers. “We’ve got a ways to go,” Gen. Robert Abrams, head of U.S. Army Forces Command, said in an interview at his office in Fort Bragg, N.C. “I’m not going to kid you. It’s been difficult because a lot of these kids had plans and their families had plans.” In just the last two weeks, the Army has paid out more than $26 million in bonuses. Google to teach school kids about online safety, etiquette MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google is spearheading an edu- cational campaign to teach preteen children how to protect them- selves from scams, predators and other trouble. The program announced today is called “Be Internet Awe- some.” Google coordinated the curriculum with several online safety groups, including the Family Online Safety Institute , the Internet Keep Safe Coalition and Connect Safely . The lessons are tailored for kids ranging from 8 to 12 years old, a time when many of today’s children are getting their own smart- phones and other devices that connect to the internet. To make the experience more fun, Google and its partners developed a game called “Interland” to help teach children about the ins and outs of online safety. Google is encouraging teachers to use elements of its program in their classrooms, too. Qatar says Kuwait trying to mediate, solve Gulf crisis DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Kuwait is trying to mediate a Gulf crisis in which Arab countries have cut diplomatic ties to Qatar and moved to isolate the energy-rich travel hub from the out- side world, Qatar’s foreign minister said early today. The biggest diplomatic crisis in the Persian Gulf since the 1991 U.S.-led war against Iraq pits several nations against Qatar, which is home to some 10,000 American troops and a major U.S. mili- tary base. Airlines suspended flights and residents nervous about the peninsula’s lone land border closing cleaned out grocery store shelves. In an interview with Doha-based satellite news network Al-Ja- zeera, Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said Kuwait’s ruler had asked Qatar’s ruling emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to hold off on giving a speech about the crisis late Monday night. “He received a call from the emir of Kuwait asking him to post- pone it in order to give time to solve the crisis,” Sheikh Moham- med said. Still, the minister struck a defiant tone, rejecting those “trying to impose their will on Qatar or intervene in its internal affairs.” After Hamas decade, Gaza short on freedom, jobs, electricity BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip — Grim records mark the 10th anniversary of Hamas rule in Gaza — the longest-ever daily elec- tricity and water cuts, 60 percent youth unemployment, and a ris- ing backlog of thousands waiting for a rare chance to exit the blockaded territory. Unable to offer a remedy, the Islamic militant group has been doubling down on oppression. It has jailed the few who dare com- plain publicly, including the young organizers of a street protest against power cuts and an author who wrote on Facebook that “life is only pleasant for Hamas leaders.” Polls show almost half the people would leave altogether if they could, but that support for the group, despite three short, devastating wars with Israel, is steady at around a third. With potential opponents crushed, there is no obvious path to regime change. Meanwhile, for most of Gaza’s 2 million people, life is bound to get worse. The international isolation of Hamas, which refuses to recog- nize Israel, will likely continue — and with it the border block- ade imposed by Israel and Egypt after the group seized Gaza in June 2007.
