Service: Hundreds visited Maritime Memorial Park

recruit in the nearby Schofield
Barracks when the Japanese
attacked. Keeth, 92, is one of
the region’s last Pearl Harbor
survivors. He went on to fight
across the Pacific Ocean in
Guadalcanal and Vella Lavella
in the Solomon Islands.
Keeeth’s daughter, Donna
Barnett, said her father’s mem-
ory is “still all right there,” add-
ing he still gets emotional when
the subject of Pearl Harbor
comes up.
A U.S. Coast Guard Dol-
phin helicopter flew past to
honor those who have died
at sea. Past Clatsop Post 12
Cmdr. Mike Phillips listed the
locals confirmed lost in various
conflicts throughout history,
including 31 in World War I,
67 in World War II, three in the
Korean War, at least 14 in Viet-
nam, five in the Middle East
and one in El Salvador. Post
member Bill Elder rang the bell
eight times to signify the end of
watch for those lost.
“When a person is lost in the
service of their country, that’s
probably the most honorable
and most … poignant comment
to make in our society,” post
Chaplain Kenneth Rislow said.
“Men and women are willing to
give everything for the contin-
uance of a noble experiment in
democracy.”
Warrenton’s statue
Many of those in attendance
at Ocean View Cemetery Mon-
day then made their way to
the U.S. Post Office in War-
renton for the Veterans of For-
eign Wars Fort Stevens Post
10580’s annual flag-changing
ceremony. The VFW recently
announced it will soon break
ground near the post office for
a bronze statue of a nameless
soldier to honor the Warren-
ton-Hammond area’s veterans.

of the post, said the statue will
stand more than 7 feet tall on
top of a nine-sided, 6-foot ped-
estal. On seven sides of the ped-
estal — one for each branch of
the U.S. uniformed services —
will be plaques with the names
of Warrenton-area veterans.
Warren said the post has
raised about $28,000 sell-
ing named bricks that will be
placed in a wall around the
statue. The fundraising acted
as a match on a $72,000 grant
from the state Parks and Recre-
ation Department. Debbie Lit-
tle, who wrote the application
for the grant, said this will be
the first such monument since
Astoria’s Doughboy, dedicated
in 1926 to honor World War I
veterans.
Little said the VFW is still
selling bricks, which can be
purchased online at www.vfw-
fortstevens10580.com or by
contacting the post’s Quar-
termaster Albert Little at
503-739-1071.

rial Park in Uniontown to pay
their respects to those whose

names are inscribed on the
walls on Memorial Day.

gave us,” Johnson said. “One
doesn’t substitute for the other.”
The 1.5 percent of state lot-
tery funds to be set aside by
voters after passage of Measure
96 in November could reach
$28 million, Johnson said.
Funds could be used to help
veterans access health care or
housing, along with employ-
ment, education and treatment
programs.
Boy Scouts
Cannon Beach Police Chief
Jason Schermerhorn, acting in
his capacity as assistant scout-
master of Troop 642, called the
Seaside Legion’s Memorial
Day observance a “great event
for the boys.”
“We come around 9; we
help set the tent and the chairs
up,” Schermerhorn said. “It’s

to those who fought for their
country.”
Scout Toby Tackitt said he
was inspired by a member of
his family who served in the
Marines.
Schermerhorn’s son, Jack-
son, was among the Scouts.
“My grandfather was in the
Navy and my great-grandfather
was in the military,” Jackson
Schermerhorn said with pride.
