They can detect one drop of blood in five quarts of water! Dogs who help people in their everyday lives are called canine companions and assistance dogs. Some dogs are carefully trained to perform tasks that help the blind, deaf, or physically-impaired. With their ultra-sensitive noses, dogs are masters at finding buried land mines. Mine-sniffing dogs have helped prevent thousands of injuries and deaths in war-torn countries. Trained sniffers also find people trapped in collapsed buildings and drugs hidden in suitcases. Some dogs have been trained to sniff out termites in buildings.
