More photos online at DailyAstorian.com/sports Olaf, Fridtjof, Lyngstad combine for shutout The Daily Astorian Great pitching and defense always wins, and right now, the Astoria Fishermen are doing it better than just about anybody at the 4A level. Astoria played another near-perfect defensive game Tuesday night in a rare appearance at Aiken Field, where the Fishermen posted a 5-0 win over Seaside in Cowapa League/Clatsop Clash baseball action. The Gulls managed only two hits off Astoria’s “Scandinavian Connection,” which works just as fine for baseball as it did in football. Pitchers Olaf Englund, Fridtjof Fremstad and Tyler Lyngstad were virtually untouchable, striking out eight with two walks. It was Astoria’s second shutout in two nights, and the 13th time in 21 games that the Fishermen have limited the opposition to two runs or less. Astoria has given up just 55 runs this season, the third-fewest among 4A teams. More importantly, the Fishermen are one win closer to the Cowapa League title and home-field advantage deep into the state playoffs. Banks hosts Valley Catholic Wednesday. A Val- iant win would result in a league title for the Fisher- men, while a Braves’ victory would put the Cowapa title on the line Friday, when Astoria hosts Banks. Only run needed It took just minutes for the Fishermen to score the only run they would need in Tuesday’s win. Trey Hageman and Englund drew back-to-back walks in the first inning, Kyle Strange reached on an infield hit to load the bases, and Englund sprinted home on a grounder by Samboy Tuimato for the first run. Englund and Fremstad drew consecutive walks to Colin Murphey/The Daily Astorian Brent Walsh dives back to first to avoid the pick-off for Seaside during a game Tuesday against Astoria. start the third, and Strange lined a single to center to bring in Englund. Astoria doubled the score in the fourth. With two outs and no runners on base, Hageman and Englund drew walks, and Fremstad greeted reliever Scott Plampin with a sharp single to left, scoring Hage- man. Englund scored on a double steal for a 4-0 lead. Plampin was effective for the Gulls over the remainder of the game, striking out three with no walks. Meanwhile, Seaside’s best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth, when a single off the left field fence by Brent Walsh and two hit batters loaded the bases with one out. But Fremstad fielded a grounder near second base and turned a 6-3 double play to end the inning. Englund threw six innings and picked up the win. Fremstad pitched to two batters in the seventh, then Lyngstad recorded the final out for the save. Strange had two of Astoria’s five hits. Seaside boys golf team fourth at Regionals The Daily Astorian BANKS — For the second year in a row, the Seaside boys golf team fin- ished one spot shy of qualifying for the state tournament. Scappoose won the team title of the District 1 Regional tournament, which concluded Tuesday at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks. Valley Catholic and Crook County secured the other two spots to next week’s state tournament, while the Gulls finished fourth. The bright spot for Seaside — all five of the Gulls’ golfers who com- peted (a junior and four sophomores) will return next year. As Tuesday’s scores were posted, it looked as if the Gulls might over- take defending state champion Crook County for the third and final qualify- ing spot for state. But the Cowboys still had Mayson Tibbs on the course, and when Tibbs came in with a 69 for the day, it knocked 60 strokes off of Crook County’s team score and the Cow- boys surged 17 strokes ahead of Sea- side to secure their spot in Corvallis next week. Scappoose carded a 636 team score, followed by Valley Catho- lic (653), Crook County (699) and Seaside (716). Astoria (798) placed eighth. Tibbs was the medalist with a three-under par 141 over the two rounds. The remainder of the all-Re- gional team was filled with players from the Cowapa League. Tillamook’s Carter Lee finished with a 151, while Scappoose teammates Nathan Mapes and Jake Gray tied for third at 152. Seaside’s Jackson Kunde was ninth with a 166. Kunde shot 82 on the second day to lead the Gulls. Samson Sibony shot 86 to finish at 175 for 15th. Mason Sham- ion finished with a 187 total, followed by Connor Merrell (188) and John Whittle (207). Kirk Fausett paced Astoria with a 184, followed by Brian Wilder (190), Taylor Palmberg (201), Dylan Altheide-Nielson (223) and Trevor Altheide-Nielson (235). “We made some great strides this year,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “We are disappointed we didn’t quite reach our goals, but we were right in the mix of things until the last group came off the course. “When we started this season a couple months ago, I thought this was going to be a tough rebuilding year. But this group of guys worked their tails off and almost got us back to the state tournament. Once again I think we have the toughest region in the state and our team can be proud of what they accomplished this year.” CORNELIUS — Oregon Episcopal and Valley Catho- lic secured their spots at the state tournament next week, as the Aardvarks and Valiants finished first and second, respectively, in the District 1 Regional golf championships. The tournament concluded Tuesday at Forest Hills Golf Course. Astoria took fourth in the team standings, while Samantha Hems- ley finished tied for ninth individ- ually, good enough for all-Region honors. After shooting 96 in Monday’s round, Hemsley had a 114 Tues- day to card a 210. Anna Li of OES, second after Day 1, overtook Morgan Hall of Scappoose to win medalist honors with a final round total of 171, to Hall’s 174. Rounding out the Astoria scores were Jenna Travers with a 216, Sadie Wooldridge (245), Kristen Travers (248) and Sarah Lertora (265). “Overall, it was a good season for us,” said Astoria coach Chris Hunt. “We’ll return four of our top five golfers next year.” Kristen Travers was Astoria’s lone senior. Seaside had three golfers com- peting: Caroline Kotson (17th overall with a 220), Madeline Brown (263) and Caitlin Hillman (298). Eagles clip the Warriors The Daily Astorian PORTLAND — Catlin Gabel rallied from an early 2-0 deficit for an 8-2 win over Warrenton Tues- day, in Lewis & Clark League baseball action. The Warriors scored two runs in their first at-bat, highlighted by Kale’o Kapua’s single and a run-scoring double by Derek Ham, who later scored on an errant pick- off attempt. Catlin’s Jasper Gordon had a double and a home run to lead the Eagles, while Ham was 3-for-3 for the Warriors. Warrenton finishes the regu- lar season Friday with a double- header at Clatskanie, where the Warriors will need at least one win to keep their league playoff hopes alive. Lady Fish defeat Valley Catholic The Daily Astorian BEAVERTON — The Astoria softball team — already locked into a third-place finish in the Cowapa League — scored a 5-4 win at Valley Catholic Tuesday, in softball action in Beaverton.
