MARX The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — Down but not out for Seaside radio sta- tion 94.9 after a wind-blown cable blew off and damaged the station’s antenna. “Saturday morning, I’m listening and I hear us go off the air and wondered what the issue was,” Mark Evans, SpinLogic Enterprises pres- ident , said Monday. “So I go up, and sure enough the trans- mitter was off, and I tried to turn it on, and it wouldn’t come back on again. It took about a day to diagnose what it was, and we realized it was the cable on the tower that slammed against our antenna.” The piece of cable that fell was more than 20 feet long, he said. “Unfortunately, when it made contact with our antenna, a short went into the line, right into our transmitter.” Evans’ local FM stations, KBGE 94.9 in Seaside and KEUB 93.3 in Gearhart, are among 18 antennas leasing space on the tower, owned Submitted Photo Downed cable at the SBA Communications tower in Seaside. by SBA Communications and located off Rippet Lane. KEUB, was not affected, nor were any of the others leasing space. “We’re the only ones suf- fering because we’re the only ones who got hit by the cable,” Evans said. Evans was able to fi nd a temporary replacement antenna to keep the station on the air, but the piece of equipment is “not anywhere near the amount of wattage we normally have,” he said. “We’re at reduced power until we can get this repaired. Thirty-fi ve -hundred watts is our typical broadcast range; right now we’re at about 50 watts, so we’re reduced dramatically.” The low-wattage antenna keeps 94.9 FM from web streaming as well as radio broadcasting. Evans said he hopes to be back on the air in “a couple of days at the most.” “The owner of the tower has people coming to climb up the tower to move that because if I put up another transmitter the way it is now, it would blow the next transmit- ter,” Evans said. “We’re in the process of getting the cable removed, and replace or repair the existing transmitter.” Police searching for witness to crash The Daily Astorian Oregon State Police is searching for a witness to a single-vehicle crash on U,S.
