City Christian had to rally to win their third game against Knappa this season, 44-33, in a Northwest League girls basketball playoff. Knappa finishes 9-13 overall, but just one win away from mak- ing the Sweet 16. City Christian (15-9) advances to play at Western Mennonite Saturday. Kristina Dickinson scored a game-high 15 points for the Lions, who swept the regular season series with Knappa. City Christian defeated Knappa 50-24 in the last meeting, Jan. 31. In Saturday’s game, however, the Loggers held a 23-19 lead at halftime. “The first half was fantastic,” said Knappa coach Marie Green. “The girls were doing a great job, and we even scored first after halftime. “But we just had too many turn- overs (35, including 19 in the sec- ond half),” she said. “We had one stretch where we turned it over on four straight possessions, and they scored on all four.” City Christian outscored Knappa 17-8 in the third quarter, and 8-2 in the fourth. Kaitlyn Landwehr and Devin Vandergriff scored seven points apiece in their last game for the Loggers. SPORTS IN BRIEF Sweet Home sweeps state swim meet The Daily Astorian GRESHAM — The Sweet Home Huskies swept the team titles Saturday, in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A portion of the OSAA state swim meet at Mt. Hood Community College. Astoria and Seaside failed to advance any swimmers to Satur- day’s finals, although the Fish- ermen and Gulls recorded some personal best swims in the preliminaries. Seaside’s Kendy Lin swam a 2:12.42 in the 200-yard free- style prelims; and Astoria’s Shan- non Christie timed a 27.07 in the 50-yard freestyle. The Astoria girls’ 200-yard free- style relay dropped nearly 3 sec- onds on their time (1:56.85); while the Seaside boys’ 200-yard free- style relay recorded a 1:40.21. Sea- side’s 200-yard medley relay just missed qualifying for the finals, finishing seventh in the prelims. Logger rally comes up short By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian FOREST GROVE — The Columbia Chris- tian Knights — the possible favorite to win the Class 2A state title, and a team that rou- tinely scores over 80 points per game — scored another narrow, low-scoring victory over their closest challenger Saturday night. In their third win of the season over Knappa, the mighty Knights had to hold on for their championship lives in a 39-36 victory in the Northwest League boys basketball top-seed game at Forest Grove High School. Both teams advance to the Sweet 16 and could easily meet for a fourth time in Pendleton. Columbia Christian will host Union, while the Loggers play at Imbler Friday. The Knights were rarely challenged this year, on their way to a 23-2 record. Other than their two losses to Life Christian (a team Knappa defeated in a league playoff last week), Columbia Christian’s two closest victories came against the Loggers (42-40 and 39-36). Knappa only had nine points at halftime of Saturday’s championship — but they only trailed by eight, 17-9. “We had them a little frustrated,” Knappa coach Chris Spencer said of the Knights. “We just couldn’t make shots. We had some wide- open looks, but they just weren’t going down. “We didn’t make our first 3-pointer until the fourth quarter, and we were 11-for-19 at the free-throw line, which didn’t help.” Knappa’s comeback was gradual. In fact, the score got worse before it got better. With seven minutes left in the fourth quar- ter, the Loggers trailed 32-15. From there, Knappa scored nine straight points and cut the deficit to 32-24 with 4:29 remaining. A three-point play by Dale Takalo with 12 seconds left cut the Knight lead to just 39-33. Columbia Christian missed a free throw at the other end, and Knappa’s Colton Weirup hit a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final three points. The Loggers missed their first 13 3-pointers of the game, and finished 3-for-19. “I wasn’t upset with the way we played,” Spencer said. “They’re a great team and well-coached. “We started forcing some turnovers and getting out in transition,” he said. “It was just hard to play from behind, when we only had 13 points going into the fourth quarter. It’s like using the two-minute offense in football — it’s hard to play like that for an entire game. “By the time we got close, they made some free throws at the end and we were in some foul trouble.” Weirup led Knappa with a game-high 13 points, followed by Takalo with 10. Knappa Loggers third in Reynolds takes third for District wrestling meet Warriors wrestling team The Daily Astorian WALDPORT — Knappa wrestling had one district cham- pion and five third-place finish- ers in the District 1/2A tourna- ment, held Friday and Saturday at Waldport. After finishing second at 182 pounds last year, Knappa’s Andrew Goozee got his district title at 195, and will compete in the state tournament for the third straight year. The senior had qualified for state before he even had to wres- tle Saturday, as Goozee advanced to the finals with two byes and a forfeit win over Nestucca’s Con- ner Cook. In the championship match, Goozee scored a 3-0 decision over Nestucca’s Chase Cook, the defending champion at 195. Knappa had five more wres- tlers place third to qualify for state. At 126, Luke Goozee opened with a 52-second pin over Levi Lancaster of Siletz Valley in the quarterfinals, before Mekhi Williams of Vernonia scored a fall (3:31) over Goozee in the semifinals. Goozee bounced back with consolation wins (by fall) over Vernonia’s Isaiah Bozied (1:28) and Nestucca’s Gabe Garcia (2:32) in the third-place match. In the second-place match, Goo- zee lost by fall to Monroe’s Alec Avery (3:44). Spencer Fulton added points for Knappa with a third-place finish at 138, where Fulton rebounded from a loss in the quarterfinals with three straight consolation wins, including a fall (3:26) over Nestucca’s Corbin Nelson in the third-place match. Kaleb Roe took third at 170, where he advanced with two byes before a loss in the semifinals. Roe bounced back with a fall (1:59) over Vernonia’s Chris- topher Lloyd in the third-place match, then lost the second-place match by fall to Neah-Kah-Nie’s Dylan Dunlap. Knappa’s David Patterson took third at 220. The runner-up at 195 last sea- son, Patterson received two byes to start, then scored a victory by pin (2:49) over Neah-Kah-Nie’s Jonathan Lommen. In the championship bout, Patterson lost to Neah-Kah-Nie’s Tristan Bennett, who scored a 46-second pin. Knappa’s Justin Perdew fin- ished third at 285. He lost his first match on the mat, a semifinal pin by Neah- Kah-Nie’s Travis Jonsson. Per- dew had two byes in the consola- tion, then lost by rule to Jonsson in the second-place match. The Daily Astorian RAINIER — The Warrenton wrestling team racked up 83.5 points Saturday, to take sixth in the team standings of the Dis- trict 1/3A championship tournament. Willamina/Falls City scored a whop- ping 372 points to win the meet, hosted by Rainier. Dayton was a distant second with 295.5, followed by Rainier (178). The Warriors had 12 wrestlers compet- ing, with six placers. “We’re thrilled for our six district plac- ers,” said Warrenton coach Corey Conant. “They battled and earned their spots on the podium. They all return next year and we’ll carry our momentum over to next season.” The highest finish went to Beau Reyn- olds, who took third at 285 pounds. The junior opened with a quarterfi- nal pin (1 minute, 30 seconds) over Ganin Bean of Taft. Willamina’s Keegan Cook scored a 22-second pin over Reynolds in the semi- finals, but Reynolds bounced back with a consolation victory by fall (1:10) over Taft’s Josue Jimenez. Other placers for the Warriors: Fourth: Armin Rodriguez, 126; Caden Hans, 160; Timothy Warren, 182; Fifth: Giovanni Martinez, 145; Sixth: Brandon Williamson, 126; Eighth: Michael Verley, 132; Morgan Buoy, 160; Devon Gru- baugh, 170; Leonard Thompson, 170. Ilwaco girls defeat Adna, again The Daily Astorian CHEHALIS, Wash. — A long post-season continued for the Ilwaco girls basketball team Saturday in Che- halis, Wash., where the Lady Fishermen were playing Adna in the third-place game of the Southwest 2B tournament. And Ilwaco improved to 2-0 in the playoffs against Adna, with a 48-41 win over the Pirates. They could play Adna a third time at the state tournament. Ilwaco is now 4-1 in the post-season, and the Fishermen aren’t close to being done, as they advance to regionals, fol- lowed by the state in Spokane, where they could play up to five games. The Lady Fishermen play Raymond at noon Saturday, at W.F. West High School in Chehalis. Boys Basketball Taholah 63, Naselle 54 MONTESANO, Wash. — The Naselle boys basketball team advanced to regionals with a 63-54 loss to Taholah Saturday, in the championship game of the Southwest District 1B tournament in Montesano.
