2A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2017 Downtown Nehalem sees fl ooding OBITUARIES Wilma M. Johnson Residents take waters in stride Benicia, California June 20, 1921 — Feb. 2, 2017 By R.J. MARX The Daily Astorian NEHALEM — High water from heavy winds and rains led to fl ooding and closed streets in downtown Nehalem Thursday. Water in the Nehalem River topped 19.68 feet, well beyond the 9.28 feet forecast, Capt. Jesse Walsh of Nehalem Bay Fire and Rescue said. High tide came at about 10:30 a.m. “It came up quickly but it’s receding at this time,” Walsh said Thursday afternoon. Walsh said power trucks had been in the area but there had been no sustained outages. “I heard somebody got bogged down on one of the roads, but they were able to be towed out and get back on the road,” he said. Nehalem resident Dave Fisher said the high waters are “nothing unusual” for Nehalem. “Heavy rains make for a swollen Nehalem River which coupled with high tides can lead to fl ooding,” Fisher said. While it has fl ooded and covered the interior fl oor in recent years since 1996 that did not happen this morning when the tide peaked. Said one employee, ‘It was just a high tide, no biggie.’ Waters came up to the front entry but no further.” Detours remain in place throughout downtown Nehalem.
