Another poster winner announced The Daily Astorian SEAIDE — The Seaside Elks Lodge has announced a change in the winners of the Eye Injury Preven- tion Poster Contest. First place is now tied between James Roehr, who was pre- viously announced, and Alyssa Chen, a Seaside Heights fi fth-grade student. She was awarded $50 and a certifi cate. The Elks were delighted with her poster, and the poster chairman decided to offer two mon- etary awards in this year’s contest. Jacob Dewey placed second. The poster contest is designed as a message to children about the causes of eye injuries. Boys age 7 to 10 are the most likely eye injury victims. U.S. Bank grants $95,000 to nonprofi ts The Daily Astorian U.S. Bank awarded more than $95,000 in grants to nonprofi t organizations in Columbia, Cowlitz, Clatsop, Tillamook, Lincoln and Coos counties, and $26.2 million in total across the country in 2016, including grants made to U.S. Bank’s national part- ners, United Way and Amer- ican Red Cross, as well as employee -giving match programs. Clatsop County received $35,000, not including mar- keting and sponsorships in the region. Maritime Archaeological Society meets in Astoria this weekend The Daily Astorian The Maritime Archaeo- logical Society is holding its annual membership meet- ing Saturday and Sunday at the Barbey Maritime Center, 1792 Marine Drive. The two days are fi lled with presen- tations, including updates on society maritime archeology projects, and an entire day of training opportunities. The project presentations and keynote address are free and open to the public. Refresh- ments will be provided. On Saturday, the annual reports and project updates begin at 9 a.m., followed by the keynote speaker at 11 a.m. The keynote speaker is Tom Beasley, executive direc- tor of the Vancouver chapter of the Underwater Archae- ological Society of British Columbia . He is presenting “Underwater Archaeological Society of British Columbia: 40-plus years of Adventure and Discovery Underwater” and “Tonquin: Solving the 200-year-old shipwreck Mys- tery.” The day wraps up with a behind - the -scenes tour of the Columbia River Mari- time Museum boat hall and artifact storage on Saturday afternoon. Sunday is dedicated to training courses for soci- ety members. Basic train- ing begins with an introduc- tion to maritime archaeology, including maritime archaeol- ogy laws and regulations, and is followed by more advanced hands-on volunteer survey training in the afternoon. For members who have already completed basic training, a remote sensor class cov- ers planning and operations the of magnetometer, side scan sonar, Remotely Oper- ated Vehicle and 3-D laser scanners.
