Lady Loggers crush Knights The Daily Astorian PORTLAND — Kaitlyn Landwehr scored 22 points and pulled down 17 rebounds with five steals to lead the Knappa girls to an easy 51-14 win at Columbia Christian Wednesday night. Ressa Inman added 10 points and nine boards for the Lady Loggers, who outscored the Knights 12-1 in a decisive second quarter. Aiko Miller finished with four points and five rebounds for Knappa, which improves to 8-7 in league. The Loggers finish the regular season Saturday at Nestucca before opening the Northwest League playoffs. Knights top Logger boys, 63-39 The Daily Astorian PORTLAND — The stretch run of the regular season is a tough one for the Knappa Loggers, who faced more strong competition on the road Wednes- day night. No. 2-ranked Columbia Chris- tian officially took over first place in the Northwest League standings with a 63-39 win over Knappa, in a Class 2A, top 10 boys basketball matchup in Portland. The Knights (13-1) jumped out to a 12-5 lead after one quarter, and led 23-8 late in the second. It was the second straight loss for the Loggers (13-2), and third in their last five games. Knappa returns to action today at home vs. Life Christian, fol- lowed by road contests at Nestucca and Life Christian. Ilwaco teams split playoff games at home By DAMIAN MULINIX For the Daily Astorian ILWACO, Wash. — Onalaska didn’t look scared to go toe- to-toe with the Pacific League champion Ilwaco Lady Fisher- men — at least in the first quar- ter. The Lady Loggers played IHS close early on, but Ilwa- co’s Makenzie Kaech had other ideas. Kaech scored a game high 22 points as the Lady Fishermen easily took down their District IV tournament first-round oppo- nent Wednesday night, 69-21. After closing out the first quarter with a 26-10 lead, the defense of Ilwaco’s Ebby McMullen early in second quar- ter helped Ilwaco in holding the Loggers to just two points in second quarter, and soon took a 20-plus point lead, finishing the first half leading 47-12. By 5:50 of the third quarter, Ilwaco had built a 53-12 lead — enough to kick the mercy rule into effect with a running clock for the remainder of the game. McMullen scored 15 for IHS, while Madeline Jacobson added 13. The Lady Fishermen now play the Central League’s num- ber two seed Adna (20-2) on Sat- urday, time and location to be determined. A win would put Ilwaco in the district semifinals next week. Fishermen can’t finish The Ilwaco boys (the Pacific League number two seed) had many chances but just couldn’t shoot their way to a win Wednes- day night in their first-round dis- trict tournament game with Win- lock. Only five players scored for Ilwaco, with Tapio racking up a game high 22. The game featured sloppy play by both teams — both shot poorly, with Winlock just shoot- ing a little bit better than IHS. Ilwaco, which relies heavily on their outside shooting, finally found some footing at the end of the third quarter, hitting multiple shots to cut the lead to 29-32. Ethan Bannister scored 8 for IHS, while Alex Kaino added 6 points. The Fishermen now face NW Christian on Monday at 8 p.m., in Tumwater in a loser-out game.
