The Astoria girls basketball team missed a few shots
in the first half (5-for-31), but in the end, it doesn’t
really matter how the Lady Fish shoot — it’s their
defense that wins games and will have them contend-
ing in the Cowapa League.
Astoria finished 17-for-64 from the field Tuesday
night, in a 47-43 win over Redmond in a first-round
game of the Vince Dulcich Memorial Tournament at
the Brick House.
Redmond held a 23-12 lead at halftime, and 25-12
early in the third quarter, but the Class 5A Panthers
completely wilted under Astoria’s defensive pressure in
the second half. Redmond finished with 30 turnovers.
The Lady Fish forced nine turnovers in the third
period, as Redmond struggled to get the ball past
midcourt.
The Panthers were equally rattled at the free throw
line, where they finished 13-of-29, which included a
4-for-18 stretch in the second half.
Astoria players were scoring on wide open lanes to
hoop, as Brooklyn Hankwitz, Hailey O’Brien and Sam
Hemsley all scored on drives to the basket during a key
third quarter run, which was sparked by a 3-pointer
from Hemsley.
Another trey from Hemsley to end the third quar-
ter tied the game at 31-31, and four consecutive baskets
from Alexis Wallace, O’Brien, Gracie Cummings and
Hankwitz put Astoria in front to stay with 4:14 left in
the fourth, at 40-37.
Astoria lost Rylee DeMander and Wallace to fouls
in the fourth quarter, while Redmond’s 6-foot-1 sopho-
more Ava Kitchin fouled out midway through the fourth.
Hemsley scored 11 points to lead Astoria, while
Wallace, Cummings and Hankwitz all added eight
apiece for the Fishermen. Redmond sophomore McK-
aylie Capps had 21 points to lead all scorers.
Astoria advances to face Hockinson in a semifinal
at 6:45 p.m. today.

JEWELL — Maddie Lambert scored 17 points
and Katie Clifford added 12 to help Neah-Kah-Nie
post a 47-24 win at Jewell Tuesday, in a nonleague
girls basketball game.
Gabi Morales had seven points to lead the Lady
Jays, who trailed 30-4 at halftime.
Boys
Pirates 57, Jewell 31
JEWELL — Jewell’s Nathan Kane had 12 points
and teammate Ben Stahly tossed in 10 points and 11
rebounds for the Jays, who came up short in a non-
league game against Neah-Kah-Nie Tuesday, 57-31.
Max Halverson led the Pirates with 15 points, as
Neah-Kah-Nie built a 34-13 halftime edge.

Fishermen reel in
the Riverhawks
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
’Tis the season for holiday basketball
tournaments. Every school has one, and if
yours doesn’t, it soon will.
Locally, the Astoria Fishermen have
one of the oldest annual holiday tourna-
ments, as the Vince Dulcich Memorial
tourney tipped off Tuesday, with games all
day at the Brick House, and one game at
Astoria Middle School.
The 48th annual tournament contin-
ues today and Thursday at Astoria High
School, where both the Fishermen boys
and girls won opening round games Tues-
day. Fourteen teams (three from Washing-
ton) were in action, and all 14 will play
today at the Brick House.
As always, the Astoria boys had Tues-
day’s late game, and — just as they’re sup-
posed to do in a first-round game of their
own tournament — the Fishermen won,
topping The Dalles, 61-50.
“I felt pretty good about the game,
given what happened early on,” said Asto-
ria coach Kevin Goin, who lost a pair of
players to ankle injuries in the first half.
Senior Fridtjof Fremstad battled for
a rebound and suffered a “moderate to
severe” sprain just 30 seconds into the
game. He later returned to the bench, and
was on crutches by the end of the game.
Sophomore Joshua Olson went down

with an ankle sprain in the second quarter,
and did not return.
“We’re the walking wounded right
now,” said Goin, who was already missing
Kyle Strange, out with an injury suffered
during the football season. “But it is what it
is. We’ll just have to play some other kids,
and give them a chance. Luckily we got
one back tonight, with Tristan (Wallace)
being cleared to play.”
The Fishermen spread the scoring
around in Tuesday’s win, with four starters
finishing in double figures.
Senior Ole Englund scored 10 of his
team-high 16 in the second half, while
Jackson Arnsdorf and Ryan Palek finished
with 12 points apiece, and Jasyn Gohl
tossed in 11 points.
The Fishermen never trailed the Class
5A Riverhawks, who trailed 7-5 early,
before Astoria went on a 12-3 run to build a
19-8 advantage early in the second quarter.
Olson and Gohl combined for three
consecutive scores for the 11-point lead.
The Dalles was 9-of-27 from the
3-point line to stay in the game, with the
Riverhawks pulling to within 40-33 in the
third quarter, and 57-49 late in the fourth.
Despite “a ton of missed layins,” Goin
said, Astoria shot well from the field, fin-
ishing 14-for-30 in the first half, and
14-for-32 in the second.
