Astoria finished 17-for-64 from the field Tuesday night, in a 47-43 win over Redmond in a first-round game of the Vince Dulcich Memorial Tournament at the Brick House. Redmond held a 23-12 lead at halftime, and 25-12 early in the third quarter, but the Class 5A Panthers completely wilted under Astoria’s defensive pressure in the second half. Redmond finished with 30 turnovers. The Lady Fish forced nine turnovers in the third period, as Redmond struggled to get the ball past midcourt. The Panthers were equally rattled at the free throw line, where they finished 13-of-29, which included a 4-for-18 stretch in the second half. Astoria players were scoring on wide open lanes to hoop, as Brooklyn Hankwitz, Hailey O’Brien and Sam Hemsley all scored on drives to the basket during a key third quarter run, which was sparked by a 3-pointer from Hemsley. Another trey from Hemsley to end the third quar- ter tied the game at 31-31, and four consecutive baskets from Alexis Wallace, O’Brien, Gracie Cummings and Hankwitz put Astoria in front to stay with 4:14 left in the fourth, at 40-37. Astoria lost Rylee DeMander and Wallace to fouls in the fourth quarter, while Redmond’s 6-foot-1 sopho- more Ava Kitchin fouled out midway through the fourth. Hemsley scored 11 points to lead Astoria, while Wallace, Cummings and Hankwitz all added eight apiece for the Fishermen. Redmond sophomore McK- aylie Capps had 21 points to lead all scorers. Astoria advances to face Hockinson in a semifinal at 6:45 p.m. today. Pirates sweep Blue Jays The Daily Astorian JEWELL — Maddie Lambert scored 17 points and Katie Clifford added 12 to help Neah-Kah-Nie post a 47-24 win at Jewell Tuesday, in a nonleague girls basketball game. Gabi Morales had seven points to lead the Lady Jays, who trailed 30-4 at halftime. Boys Pirates 57, Jewell 31 JEWELL — Jewell’s Nathan Kane had 12 points and teammate Ben Stahly tossed in 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Jays, who came up short in a non- league game against Neah-Kah-Nie Tuesday, 57-31. Max Halverson led the Pirates with 15 points, as Neah-Kah-Nie built a 34-13 halftime edge. Every school has one, and if yours doesn’t, it soon will. Locally, the Astoria Fishermen have one of the oldest annual holiday tourna- ments, as the Vince Dulcich Memorial tourney tipped off Tuesday, with games all day at the Brick House, and one game at Astoria Middle School. The 48th annual tournament contin- ues today and Thursday at Astoria High School, where both the Fishermen boys and girls won opening round games Tues- day. Fourteen teams (three from Washing- ton) were in action, and all 14 will play today at the Brick House. As always, the Astoria boys had Tues- day’s late game, and — just as they’re sup- posed to do in a first-round game of their own tournament — the Fishermen won, topping The Dalles, 61-50. “I felt pretty good about the game, given what happened early on,” said Asto- ria coach Kevin Goin, who lost a pair of players to ankle injuries in the first half. Senior Fridtjof Fremstad battled for a rebound and suffered a “moderate to severe” sprain just 30 seconds into the game. He later returned to the bench, and was on crutches by the end of the game. We’ll just have to play some other kids, and give them a chance. Luckily we got one back tonight, with Tristan (Wallace) being cleared to play.” The Fishermen spread the scoring around in Tuesday’s win, with four starters finishing in double figures. Senior Ole Englund scored 10 of his team-high 16 in the second half, while Jackson Arnsdorf and Ryan Palek finished with 12 points apiece, and Jasyn Gohl tossed in 11 points. The Fishermen never trailed the Class 5A Riverhawks, who trailed 7-5 early, before Astoria went on a 12-3 run to build a 19-8 advantage early in the second quarter. Olson and Gohl combined for three consecutive scores for the 11-point lead. The Dalles was 9-of-27 from the 3-point line to stay in the game, with the Riverhawks pulling to within 40-33 in the third quarter, and 57-49 late in the fourth. Despite “a ton of missed layins,” Goin said, Astoria shot well from the field, fin- ishing 14-for-30 in the first half, and 14-for-32 in the second.
