7B THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2016 Seaside High puts the ‘oomph’ in the yearbook When it comes to captur- ing significant events and activ- ities throughout the school year and preserving them through quotes and photographs, the staff of Seaside High School’s Seabreeze yearbook is poised for the task. Production of the year- book is managed primarily by the program’s student editors. Senior Megan McQuilliams is editor in chief this year. Diana Tinoco serves as photo editor; Max McNeill as copy editor; Danielle Keen as design editor; and Anita Barbic as business manager. The remaining staff is com- prised of about 20 other stu- dents, who may take yearbook one to three terms depending on their other activities or classes. “You have to kind of keep the class even between experi- enced people and new people, just so we don’t have such a huge learning curve,” said Amy Rider, the teacher adviser who took over the program from Susan Baertlein this year. The two teachers co-taught during first term; Rider will be solo for the remaining two terms. The transition will give Baertlein time to oversee the fall play next school year, among other things. “As teachers here you have to take on coaching clubs, basi- cally whatever is out there to be done,” Rider explained. “(Baer- tlein) needed to clear her plate so she could take on some other things, and I got tapped.” Although the job fell into her lap, she added, “it is a really positive thing.” She majored in English in college and has long harbored an interest in year- book and magazine editing. At larger school districts, such as the one she previously taught in, the yearbook program can run under the same person for years. “Here, something comes up and you jump in with both feet and you learn as you go,” Rider said. “I’m totally happy to do it.” 300 Jewelry 340 Fuel & Wood Buying Gold, Silver, Esiaie Jewelry, Coins, Diamonds, Old-Waiches. Case No.: 16PB07554 V EGETATION M ANAGEMENT Bigbyʼs Tree Service In the past, Rider said, schools would use “sort of a boilerplate format” from year to year, and crank out an almost identical yearbook, just with different photos. Seaside is trying something new with its layout this year. While the yearbook will feature the traditional sections, it will be designed with a “modern lay- out, more like what you would see in a magazine,” Rider said. The goal is to produce a clean, fashionable layout, Baer- tlein said, adding, “We’re try- ing to declutter, or tidying up our pages.” Rider said she is impressed by the students’ design abilities. For instance, Keen personally crafted the font being used on the front cover this year. Their skills have been rec- ognized the past two years at Yearbooks Northwest, a sum- mer camp attended by stu- dents from Oregon and Wash- ington. At the camp, students must come up with a design and yearbook cover by the end. The projects are displayed and judged by media professionals. During this past summer, Sea- side won Outstanding Concept and Design Package. “It really stood out this year,” Rider said of the Seaside students’ submitted work. L EGAL N OTICES Y OU R GU ID E TO LOCAL PROF E SSIONAL S A RBORIST curriculum, Rider said. One of the first assignments, which involves all students, is selling advertisements. During “ad day,” the students are split into groups, with some students going around Seaside and oth- ers around Cannon Beach and Gearhart to solicit businesses to take out advertisements, Rider said. Sales and advertisements cover the majority of costs for the program. If a business purchases a quarter-page or larger ad, then they receive a complimentary yearbook. Some keep them to display at their office. Others choose to donate them to a stu- dent who is unable to purchase one. “We try to make sure all the kids get them,” Rider said. Brienne R.
