THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2016 AHS PREVIEWS Swimming Fishermen restocking the pool Rebuilding year for Astoria By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian With most of their athletes new to competitive swim- ming, the 2016-17 season will be “very much a rebuilding year” for Astoria swimming, according to coach Amy Emmett. “More than half the team is new to competitive swim- ming,” she said. The Fishermen have a number of returning swim- mers and experienced talent, but they also have an equal number of swimmers with no experience at all. Which makes for a lot of question marks as Asto- ria swimming enters a new season. A preseason roster of 34 swimmers included only three freshmen, but 17 of the 34 have no prior competitive swimming experience. The Fishermen scored well in the District 1 tourna- ment a year ago. Out of nine competing teams, the Astoria girls’ and boys’ teams both finished third in their respective team standings. Their biggest name is back for the boys, as Joshua Ship- ley returns for his sophomore season. Shipley made the biggest splash for Astoria in the dis- trict meet in February, win- ning the 100-yard breast- stroke as a freshman, ahead of Rainier junior Jin Young Kim and two swimmers from Newport. In addition to finishing third in the district 200-yard freestyle, Shipley went on to finish eighth in the breast- stroke preliminaries at the state meet. Unfortunately, three- fourths of that four- some (Olivia Paul, Ashley Schacher, Megan Sparks) has graduated, with senior Kendal Gustafson the lone returner. Junior Thayne Covert is back for the boys, after plac- ing fourth at districts in the 200-yard individual med- ley; while Shannon Christie — younger sister of school record-holder Taylor Christie — returns for her senior sea- son after a year away from Astoria. 7A Gilbert, Hageman return for Astoria wrestling team Fishermen excited about new season By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian Considering that they compete in one of the tough- est districts at the Class 4A level, a sixth-place finish (out of 11 teams) wasn’t that bad for the Astoria wrestling program. The Fishermen are set for another year in the Special District 1 4A Region, where Astoria competes with the likes of Crook County, Tilla- mook, Banks and Scappoose. Getting past the Cow- apa League powers is tough enough, while Crook County will be gunning for its fourth straight state title at the 4A level. All in all, not a bad per- formance for the Fishermen in 2015-16, as they qualified four wrestlers for the state tournament. “We’re excited about this season,” said Astoria coach Roy Sanchez. “We have two state tournament qualifiers returning — Trey Hageman and Kaden Gilbert — who wrestled at 138 and 182 last year, respectively. “Trey wrestled tough against the No. 3 seed, tak- ing him down before even- tually losing that and the fol- lowing match. He’s coming off a great season in football, and we expect him to qualify and place at state this year as a junior. Trey will wrestle at either 138 or 145 this year.” Gilbert is “returning from a successful season in which he was a match away from plac- ing at the state tournament as Photos by Danny Miller/The Daily Astorian Trey Hageman, left, and Kaden Gilbert practice in November at Astoria High School. THE WRESTLERS The Astoria High School wrestling team practices in November. a freshman at 182,” Sanchez said. “His martial arts experi- ence confuses, frustrates and usually beats his wrestling opponents. More time on the mat will only help Kaden improve.” Elsewhere, “Juan Jimenez returns at 106 as a junior. After earning the No. 1 seed at the regional tournament, Juan wrestled back for the chance to win a true-fourth quali- fying spot, but was a lock- ing-hands penalty away from winning that last match.” Other returners are seniors Jared Lucore and Sofia Ward; juniors Jeff Stutznegger and Tyler Ranta; and sophomores Matthew Hubbert, Sadie Ward and Ian Johnson.
