He takes over lead- ership from Ed Cox, who will exchange his master’s gavel for a sword, the tradi- tional emblem of the tyler, the Mason who guards the outer door during meetings. Robbins will be in the unusual position of being the leader of two Long Beach Peninsula organiza- tions in the same year. The retired Woodland, Washing- ton, policeman and U.S. Air Force veteran is commander of Don R. Grable Post No. 48 of the American Legion in Ilwaco. The Free and Accepted Masons from Occident No. 48 will install officers at the lodge building, 208 E. Spruce St., in Ilwaco Dec. 10. The installation starts at 1 p.m. and is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served afterward. As well as Robbins as master, the other 2017 offi- cers to be installed are Mike Thornton, senior warden; Patrick Webb, junior war- den; Walt Twidwell, senior deacon; Les Moore, junior deacon; Glenn Ripley, sec- retary; Art Herring, trea- surer; Norm Grier, chap- lain; Jerry Bruner, marshal; Sherm Richmond, senior steward; Dick Rodlun, junior steward; and Cox, tyler. Ron Robbins, new master of Ilwaco’s Masonic lodge Occident 48 Installing master is Twid- well; installing marshal is Richmond; installing chap- lain is Dobby Wiegardt; and installing secretary is Mike Carmel, a past master of the lodge who serves as district deputy to the grand master of Washington Masons. The four other lodges in Ilwa- co’s district in Southwest Washington are Longview, Kelso, Woodland-Kalama and Castle Rock. Ilwaco merged with Gavel 48 lodge of Ray- mond, Wash., in February. The Masons gather on the first Thursday of each month with a dinner at 6:30 p.m. and meeting at 7:30 p.m., except July and August, plus informal lunches at the lodge hall most Wednes- days at noon. Regardless of one’s beliefs or religion, anyone can sing HU (pronounced hue), an ancient name for God; it is for the spiritual upliftment of those who come, and is not directed to any other purpose. A labyrinth introduction is offered at 3 p.m., upon request. It takes an average of 30 minutes to complete the walk. During Advent, Grace offers a Taizé Prayer and Song service at 7 p.m. each Wednesday. The service consists of sim- ple repeated chants, periods of silence, prayers individual and communal, and the lighting of candles.
