The Valiants built a big 44-0 lead in the second quarter, and Valley Catholic quarterback Alex Tranquill capped the night with a 25-yard touchdown toss to Charlie Bevins for the inal score. LOGGERS DOMINATE On ‘National Guard Night’ Knappa tops Nestucca, 58-22 The Daily Astorian NAPPA — The Knappa Loggers were well-prepared, accomplished what they wanted to, and executed perfectly in most phases of the game Friday night, in a 58-22 win over Nestucca. The Northwest League football game at Knappa wasn’t nearly as close as the score, as the Loggers dominated both sides of the ball. Andrew Goozee — Knappa’s one-man wrecking crew — scored another six touch- downs and averaged over 10 yards per carry; while the Logger defense held the Bobcats to less than three yards per run. Knappa improved to 2-0 in league and will be heavily favored in its inal two league games, as the Loggers close in on the North- west League title. Meanwhile, the struggles continue for Nestucca, ranked 29th out of 29 teams at the Class 2A level. A play that typiied the night for the ’Cats — following a second quarter score, Nestucca attempted an onside kick — which traveled all of two yards. Nestucca had somewhere in the neighbor- hood of seven fumbles, inished with three turnovers and had a punt blocked. Knappa’s irst drive of the night lasted nine plays, with Goozee carrying eight times and capping the drive with a 7-yard TD run. Knappa lost a fumble and did not recover any of its onside kicks, but led 42-6 by the time of Goozee’s ifth touchdown. The Loggers host Neah-Kah-Nie Friday. The Pirates have not beaten Knappa since 2002. Astoria wins at Tillamook, 27-7 The Daily Astorian Damian Mulinix/For the Daily Astorian Ilwaco defensive back Ethan Bannister tackles Raymond running back Patrick Edwards during Friday night’s Fishermen win over the Seagulls. Ilwaco rallies past Raymond The Daily Astorian ILWACO, Wash. — Raymond held a 9-0 lead early in the second quarter, before the Ilwaco offense kicked in to gear, help- ing the Fishermen to a 35-17 win over the Seagulls. Ilwaco recovered two onside kicks, and the Seagulls further helped the Fishermen with a fumble on another kickoff and a fumbled punt. Ethan Bannister caught a 25-yard pass from Jack Odneal to open Ilwaco’s scor- ing midway through the second quarter. Alec Bell added a 1-yard scoring run, but the Fishermen still trailed 17-14 at halftime. First place in the Paciic 2B League Coastal division, Ilwaco outscored the vis- itors 21-0 in the second half, highlighted by third quarter scores from Tenyson Ram- sey (10-yard catch from Odneal), and a 38-yard scoring scamper from Odneal. Brandon McMullen capped the night with a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Odneal passed for 97 yards (8-of-17) and rushed for 78. TILLAMOOK — The Til- lamook Cheesemakers had a former Astoria Fisherman on the sidelines (Tillamook head coach Kye Johnson), while the Astoria Fishermen had a for- mer Tillamook Cheesemaker scoring all their touchdowns Friday night. In the end, the No. 2-ranked Fishermen continued their romp through the Cowapa League, with a 27-7 win at Tillamook. Astoria senior Samboy Tui- mato — a transfer from Tilla- mook — scored all four touch- downs, to help his newest team improve to 3-0 in league play. The Fishermen — who host Banks Thursday — were miss- ing receiver Ryan Palek (shoul- der injury), and lost receiver Kyle Strange on the last play of the irst half to a leg injury. Astoria opened the night with a 65-yard drive, capped by Tuimato’s irst touchdown, a 4-yard run. That would be the only score of the irst half, however, with both defenses making stops. The Fishermen inally broke down Tillamook’s defensive barriers with a 40-yard scor- ing drive at the end of the third quarter. A big run by Tyler Ranta, a 13-yard pass from Fritz Frem- stad to Tuimato and Tuimato’s 15-yard run to the 2-yard line set up Tuimato’s second TD of the night for a 14-0 lead. Asto- ria had its longest scoring drive midway through a rainy fourth quarter. Highlighted by a big 30-yard throw from Frems- tad to Zach Patterson, Tuimato capped an 80-yard drive with a 6-yard TD run and a 21-0 lead. Tillamook’s Garrett Martin- dale returned the ensuing kick- off 95 yards to help the Chee- semakers avoid the shutout, but the Fishermen answered right back with another 40-yard drive, culminating with Tuima- to’s 11-yard TD run in the clos- ing minutes.
