Submitted Photo Caruana wins Estacada Invite The Daily Astorian ESTACADA — Astoria cross country runner Lucas Caruana is gearing up for a great post-season run, follow- ing another victory Wednesday. The senior was just a cou- ple seconds off his 5,000- meter personal best, on a slick, rainy course in the Estacada XC Invite, held at McIver Park. Caruana inished in 17 minutes, 1.40 seconds, well ahead of Estacada senior Tyler Kammeyer (17:17). Unfortunately, the Asto- ria boys did not score as well in the team standings, inish- ing ifth out of ive teams. Estacada took irst with 36 points, followed by Molalla, Madras and Gladstone. Astoria’s next-highest in- isher was sophomore Parker Ivanhoff (22nd, 19:24). Astoria junior McK- enzie Burnett also ran a very strong race, setting a new personal best, but was passed in the inal 800 meters to inish second behind Estacada’s Hannah Hart in the girls’ race. Hart inished in 21:00, to Burnett’s 21:14. Kathy Perez placed 15th in 24:02 for the Lady Fishermen, who were third in the team standings behind Estacada and Molalla. Pirates win the Wreck of the Iredale Race Pirates had 30 points on the girls’ side, ahead of Rainier (47), Clatskanie (69) and War- renton (81). Knappa also had runners taking part in the girls’ race. Neah-Kah-Nie freshman Aspen Becker recorded the best time, inishing in 19 min- utes, 25 seconds. She was fol- lowed by freshman teammate Karissa Hadermann in 19:28, with Knappa senior Devin Van- dergriff a distant third in 21:23. Warrenton’s top inisher was freshman Kaisa Liljenwall, seventh in 22:20. Warrior senior Taylor Owens was 13th (23:39). Six teams scored in the boys’ race, with Neah-Kah-Nie picking up the victory with 55 points. Rainier (58) was sec- The Daily Astorian WARRENTON — The Neah-Kah-Nie Pirates scored a pair of team victories Tues- day in the “Wreck Race,” the annual cross country meet hosted by Warrenton. The third-annual event took place in Fort Stevens State Park, on the beach and on the paths and parking areas near the wreck of the Peter Iredale. A 5,000-meter varsity race was held, along with a 3,000- meter race for middle school runners. Runners had to deal with 30-plus mph winds, with hail and heavy rains at times. Neah-Kah-Nie topped the team standings in the high school varsity race, as the ond, followed by Clatskanie (60), Warrenton (65), Knappa (124) and City Christian (162). Neah-Kah-Nie senior Colby Hixson inished irst in 16:12, ahead of Warrenton senior Luke Liljenwall (16:53). War- rior teammate Alan Martinez was sixth in 17:31, just ahead of Knappa’s Cody Hobbs (17:37). Astoria swept the middle school race. Astoria eighth-grader Sophie Long was the girls’ winner in 11:20, helping the Vikings to 39 points in the team standings ahead of Broadway Middle School (58), Neah- Kah-Nie (60) and Warrenton (74). Astoria easily won the boys’ race with 24 points, well ahead of Warrenton (54), Rainier (54) and Neah-Kah-Nie (115).
